How to stop being a slow developer

I have 1 YOE and I often miss my deadlines which causes spillover. The tasks assigned to me get completed by me, and I face very little difficulty in it. Also, when someone asks me about a different part of the codebase, I am unable to answer confidently. I tried reading documentation, but couldn't figure out much. But still I do read the documentation sometimes. I identified distractions and removed them, mostly my phone. But recently I noticed that I still miss deadlines, but the reason for that is I take a long time to figure out the issue/feature that I am going to develop. So far I have tried - Removing distractions, by uninstalling SM apps - White boarding the issue beforehand - Communicating better and early. Things I am going to try - Use debugger instead of logs(I know, should have done before) - Document before implementing (Didn't know, that this was a standard practice before)

You remind me of a Junior in my Team, hardly 1 yr experienced. I am getting frustrated with him due to this, sometimes he gets confused about very simple things. But fortunately I don’t have to deal with him on day to day basis, otherwise I would have pulled my hairs out. My suggestion- Try to understand the system, try to understand what you are working on, what that application does, what user expects, what is the actual intent. Gradually, developers have to start thinking like the applications’s user. Usually product managers do that, but developers too need to have same understanding (or better), as them. If you don’t really understand what your application does, you will keep making mistakes.

Well, if you're unsure of anything during story pointing (or estimations) then add a few buffer points (or hrs). Everyone has to go through documentation OR ask for help whenever there's a blocker. Not everything about the system can be known by any particular individual. I personally like to ask the team about 3 things during pointing / estimations: 1. What's the complexity of the story? (Just a gut feel. If developers are confident then all good else it needs to br broken down further) 2. Is there any dependency? (Can the work be done without this?) 3. Do we have any unknowns? (New tech, new architecture/API/system, need to check documentation, not familiar with system, etc.) If any of the above is high, then additional buffer is added to avoid slippage.

Get very very familiar with your IDE and tweak it to the T. Highly recommend jetBrain IDEs as they are class apart. Get as many productivity plugins as you want. Setup the whole infra locally. Testing and developing on a stage is time consuming, if your architecture and systems allows you to run the cluster locally, do it. Will make ur life easier and u can mess around without fear. Use monitors, keyboard shortcuts, macros etc. These things take time to develop a habit off. Create mind map before implementing. Say trying to implement a new feature, clear a mind of how which services will be touched, what needs to be passed from where and how. Dont need to write it down, a mental model shud do. Compartmentalise, develop small pieces, test and then plug in into bigger piece.

How do you thrive or unblock yourself from a hurdle

Basically let's say if you're on remote and you are working on a large code base which was built over the years. You have been assigned something to do & you end up in a hurdle or loop. You can't seem to get it working or whatever you think it's not working. How do you proceed in this situation, given the remote environment , can't go and tap on someone's shoulder's immediately. Started working in a new org two months back as a PM. while discussing new requirememts with the tech I am always affraid that whatever I am saying is correct or not. As I am not familiar with all the systems. Sometimes during sprint planning tech will tell me or my manager would say you missed this scenario or this functionality works like this so we may have some issue in approach you are taking. I feel like everyone is judging me if I am making any mistake. No idea how to overcome this , pretty low on confidence now a days and keep on thinking am I good enough ?

Does your company document & maintain API? If yes, How?

This question is more focused toward startups. A single developer single handedly built entire backend over the two years and poorly documented everything during the process. Now he has left the company and there's so much chaos while working with APIs. My work mainly involves UI integration and hence I struggle a lot to do basic work. Sometimes I end up spending hours debugging and end up realizing this parameter expects a differ type of value than I was sending. Recently I got frustrated so much and decided to clean up everything and write well structured documentation. I want to know how other companies manage this. - What tools and services do you use? - When do you do it? How do you do it? Do you maintain it often? - Is there any guide/reference/open source project that I can refer to get better understanding of the whole process? Any additional help appreciated.

Feeling shitty about performance feedback

Today, I received a warning email from the HR stating my performance is slow and they are going to decide on my employment. I have joined this company very recently, as SDE 2. They are expecting me to complete a 30 day task within 10 days. I got excited and took it. I have been working my ass off, beyond the clock to achieve it. Most of it was new to me, since i don't have professional experience on this particular stack. It took me 6 days to achieve stability and structure of the application. Literally I haven't been sleeping a bit. Now after 10 days they just shared this email. I really wanted to let this out.

How to deal with this?

I was currently in a project with no proper planning and the majority of the code written by team mates are full of bugs. The code is being written for a new application not yet deployed or in the testing stage so no way of knowing the bugs. If I point out the bugs I end up fixing them and it is getting really frustrating. But I can't just look away. I'm 💯 sure this application won't even work. Should I just ignore and continue my work?

How many hours do you actually work per day?

For me 5 - I start by 11 and end by 7 but take an hour lunch break, 4-5 tea/coffee breaks and some gossips - I tracked one day and it was 5.2 hrs. What about you?
