What policy by your employer backfired?
In one of my friend ex-company manager was tired of bugs and system going down very often. So instead of focusing on code quality, unit test, automating flows. He decided he would maintain sheet based on number of bugs fixed for devs and for QA's it would be number of bugs found.
Whichever team would fix highest number bugs would get extra bonus or something. Similarly for QA.
Guess what one team figured out how to beat the system. They dev and qa teams teamed up. tons of bugs were written and only to be found by QA and quickly squashed by Dev's.
Plan backfired. Client was paying for all the extra hours spent on fixing this. I don't remember of the bonuses were paid.
Lol, reminds me of a tech company where the new bossman fired people who had written the least amount of code!

In previous company hr gal wanted devs to login into HRMS portal and mark attendance check in, check out time everyday.
1 hero setup a cron job on staging server to hit the HRMS portal api using admin credentials to mark everyone present at 9 am sharp, needless to say for few months everyone was euphoric 🤣 Then the leadership realised and decided to treat us as adults, finally no more attendance checks 🎉
The OGs for this are the ex-employers of our grand/great-grand parents: British Government in India -> During the time of colonial India, the government became concerned that too many deadly cobras roamed the streets of Delhi. The leaders came up with a clever solution – pay a bounty to any citizen who brought forward a dead cobra. The “cash for snakes” program worked like a charm for a while, and the streets became clear of these poisonous reptiles.
But then a shift happened. The payouts began to increase at a staggering pace. When British officials investigated, they discovered an unexpected consequence. Entrepreneurs started breeding cobras in mass numbers, so they could be killed and delivered to the Government for a handsome reward. Outraged and refusing to be taken advantage of, the British officials immediately canceled the program. At that point, the market for dead cobras dried up completely for budding snake startups, so the entrepreneurs cut their losses by releasing the snakes into the streets of Delhi, making the original problem of wild cobras far worse. The government wasted tons of cash, only to end up with a much bigger problem.

Previous startup did not have mention of compulsory notice period in policy. Quit the fuck in a single day. Toxic BS

They announced in a dedicated meeting that they'll start looking at users' lines of code in our GitHub repository as a metric for productivity. Backporters and refactorers became absolute kings. People with heavy impact one line fixes were at the bottom. They reverted the decision pretty fast once they realised this. Still, many good devs stopped putting in efforts and left because of the sheer stupidity of the management.
Lol. I remember Twitter did something similar after Elon Musk bought it.

Founders were pissed with employees for not being as high energy and involved as them, we had no reason to tbh. They tried team building exercises which were mostly too forced.
One of them started raging one day and asked everyone to quit if we didn't feel like working, I took em up on it and so did another colleague.
They weren't expecting that lol. Ended up freelancing for them for a bit because they literally weren't prepared for me to leave. Overall nice people, they just didn't understand we had no skin in the game to be as involved as them.
Me ex-company had a 6 month notice period and they would guve 5lac in advance. But the notice period would start once 5lac is given which is only given after successful completion of x number of trainings. I and many others didn't do the training intentionally. We never got 5lac and notice period remained 1 month. We keep pushing the deadline with hr and talent team that we are working and completing assignments. We gained almost 1 yr exp and left for higher package with 1 month notice only. ✌️✌️

In my first company (where I joined as fresher), they had a bond of 3 years (or 1.5Lakhs as amount, that too in 2017). So we 4 developers joined the team.
After 2 years, they announced that we have faith in our employees and hence no bond for you all (our team was treated as sister company)
It backfired, all 4 developers left the company in next 3 months 😂
