Help from experienced folks

Due to the toxic environment at my current employer(FAANG), I had to resign. I am taking a job which is a step down in pay and role (a refresh basically) and am moving outside tech( no hiring in tech rn :/)

In short to long term, how can I save this career mishap? Although the step down is worth it mentally, given the toxicity I am facing in my team at FAANG, I do want to recover professionally. I have applied a lot but I am 100% sure I won’t get a better job in this market.

I always dreamt of working at FAANG, never knew the situation of people there, I visualised it as a cool workplace a chill boss, and everything organised. 🥲

It has been my worst employer experience till date. I might not have had to take a career step back if I would have been at any other place.

That's some reality check for me. Thank you loads. I really hope you take some time off, refresh, and start off from wherever you wish to. To share, I quit my work because it felt toxic, took a break after 5 years, worked on my passion, took up freelancing. Now, I feel I'm ready for a full-time role. Break does really help and heal. 🌸

Agree on this. Google India has become equally toxic. Only Amazon gets the public beating but IMO Google and Microsoft work life has also deteriorated recently post hiring influx. Micromanagement , Teams calling out other Teams, project approval is other shithole nowadays. They are mostly now into acquiring other startups rather than build on your own

In such company sizes the experience & culture really varies except Amazon has specifically more bad apples due to what keeps those apples still running the show. Anyway, point is that only in smaller companies with bad apples at top itself, it can ruin culture for everyone. In general try to get lot more info about your team before you join anywhere. Most people leave company bcoz of people than the company itself.

Microsoft definitely has some crap managers who neither have technical depth nor good people skills.Did you try changing projects before resigning? Maybe could habe waited for some more time for hiring to improve?

Don't understand why are you moving out of tech. There are tech hirings still ongoing, it's less but not 0. Microsoft isn't known to be a paymaster, so even decent companies can match your comp.

If you have trust over your skills, then go for it. You will eventually get what you deserve in the long run, once the conditions improve. Also, after a certain threshold, money hardly matters. Infact in my case, i used to be more happy and content when i used to earn 50k per month. Now at 2L, i just go to office, come back, eat and sleep. That's it.
