How do you make new good friends?

I have a few good friends, but I feel that there is a big mismatch between our interests or lifestyle.

I have often met great people on trips, online etc. Although I had a really good time with them, I can't call them good friends. I would never call them up to just talk or banter around.

So more precisely, how do you develop real friendships with people that are compatible with you?

Or have I got it all wrong? Do you just keep yourself occupied enough so that you don't feel this urge of having highly compatible & close relationships?
