I do that on Email, I do that on Whatsapp. I also archive all Group chats that I havent blocked yet. I ping the ppl I frequently contact, so they are always on top. My messages tab is only DM (no GC) with close people, frequent contacts and recently relevant (bike repair / doctor etc).
In my mind, Emails are for records (fin/Ecom/receipts etc), SMS for alerts & Whatsapp for casual personal contact.

One option is block, but then youāll be bombarded with promotional messages the moment you buy something in any of the company. Another option is have a secondary sim(no WhatsApp in this number) and give that number whenever you buy something online/offline.
Block them on the first message, there are no companies in my chat. SMS is what's they have, and what they deserve. Whenever I'm signing up or checking out anywhere, I make sure to uncheck all the optional boxes, one of them is this sneaky "receive updates and offers on WhatsApp" which most people leave checked, and thus, this shitstorm
