just curious what the community thinks? 

i’ve heard that some tech startups (especially crypto ones) pay a lot but sometimes go bust within 6-7 months so often engineers have a short tenure on their resumes. also sometimes engineers just job hop. 

i’ve also switched a company after 7-8 months as i didn’t like it. i’m curious how resumes are looked at! how short is too short? how many such experiences will establish a pattern?

Been in this company for about 8 months. Company is great but there’s just this team that works on all the important things that’s absolutely hard to keep up with. They don’t share anything with us till the last minute. 
I was asked to share some copy for something and when I asked was more information, I was told that it’s “confidential”. I just pointed out that I can’t do anything about it if I’m not given more info. I’ve been begging for more responsibilities the past couple of months. I’m okay with mediocrity and just warming the bench for a few weeks. But can’t let my career take a fall with that. 
I’ve jumped between jobs too many times, I last a year at best everywhere and I want to stay here for a while and build up. But the more I watch them, making plans with the founders, doing their thing and hiring new people, all the while I’m here asking to be seen, it feels like this is just how it’s going to be. 
I get paid well, I spend only about 2 to 3 hours working everyday. Might sound like the ideal job for some but I definitely feel like if a layoff comes, I’ll bite the dust because I was not given the opportunity to be part of this group and did nothing important.

I come from a non-tech background and have ~4.5 years of work-ex across banking, consulting and business development (2.5 years, 7 months, and 1.5 years respectively). Last month, I switched to a CoS role in a startup but not really loving it so far. How long do I have to stay here so it doesn’t reflect poorly on my CV?

Had a call with my cousin this weekend. Life has been very hectic lately so, I have been laying low for a while now. Anyway, my cousin reached out and he brought up something very interesting. He mentioned how the quality of new engineering grads at FAANG has been trending downwards over the last three or so years.

Technical competency aside, there is a weird behavioural shift wherein freshers have adopted job hopping every 2-3 years. He told me that there are zero engineers who stayed longer than 3 years at his org. 

I mean optimizing for pay is fine. The thing to really balance for is impact in the long run because at one point you would find it hard to scale beyond a Lead/EM role at an org. 

But the real thing is that the "FAANG" hype has started to die down amongst the 99th percentile of talent. I wonder how long will it take to have a trickle down effect to 80th percentile and so on.

Just to validate, I asked a friend for his opinion and he opined that "Bhai, tum FAANG mei naaukar ho ya kisi startup mei, ho toh naukar hi." Translation: "You can work at FAANG, or at a startup but you are still a servant(employee)"

Was there any faang hype among 99th percentile folks in the first place?? 
 I graduated from a tier-1 college, majority of my friends are from Similar colleges and if I look in my friend circle, most of the folks are working at high growth startups or something of their own.  
 Sorry to say but faang was never aspirational to begin with.  
 The target audience of youtuber bhaiya/didis were tier-2/3 folks and maybe this kind of hype exists among them.

Is job-hopping every 1-2 years career suicide or the best way to advance in tech? Any experiences and opinions?

The general advice that I have heard is to just keep learning and enter the workforce when it is normal again.

But I thought for some people, this is the push that they needed to build their own startup or business. Sitting without any job that screw anybody's mind so this seems to be an option too. Funding is dried up but people with a good enough runaway can start a business together in a bootstrapped manner.

Even if you return to the workforce right now, there isn't a guarantee you'll be getting your previous CTC, the previous WLB. Companies are trying to cost cut by overloading on a per employee basis and raising competitive nature between teammates themselves. If you getting this much toll, 70 hours per week in worst cases, might as well put that effort on your own venture. 

Building a startup is risky. But when your current job is itself risky, doesn't seem wrong to build one. 

But popping up of such small scale business doesn't happen much. Why?

Seeing so much of the talented currently laid off, why aren't we seeing new bootstrapped businesses?

I wish to know the pros/cons of frequently switching jobs. 
I am in a dilemma, there are posts here and there that say don't switch frequently and then there are posts that nobody cares about frequent job switches, as you are a dev.

Imagine you are the Hiring manager looking for a Tech Lead who is having 8-10 years of experience. 
  
 He/She has already switched 6-7 companies in the period of 9 years. Will you consider that person working for you? 
  
 I personally won’t.

Switch comes with Bad impression

I’m not a big fan of 6 rounds of Dynamic programming, but, should easy interviews be viewed as red flags?
I recently landed an offer from a startup ( <50 employees ). They had only 1 tech round ( API development assignment ). Rest was talking to folks. Should I view this as a red flag?

RANT ALERT

I am a Software Engineer with 2 YoE. Wherever I apply they ask for 3+ or 5+ YoE minimum. I am hardly eligible for any roles. To one recruiter I really got angry and said "What is it that you believe 3+YoE candidates can do and 2+ can't ?" 
I got the same old reply - "It is company's policy" . I wonder who makes them. There are some really stupid people above us. 

Seriously - how does an EM decide that this position requires at least 10 YoE. I bet they haven't the slightest clue and possibly tossing a coin. Or worst, they think what they were capable of doing at 10+ YoE themselves.

Years of Experience is killing me

If frequent job switch does matter then how frequent? Every 6 months is frequent or every 1 year is frequent?

What other criteria do you also see?

About me: 25M working in a super early stage startup for 1yr.

The startup is only 2 yrs old with seed funding. 2 pivots, but none worked. The 3rd pivot is interesting and we still don't know if it'll work 


I want to understand the life of an Early employee, how do you manage to keep hope, or when to call it quits?

Have vested esops. Also feel if I can get 1.5X cash salary if i switch

Few months back I was put under pip. It's a well known org and I had been only with them for 1.5 months and in probation when they did this. Their reason: 'its just a hygiene thing' and that I'm 'too introverted' and should 'interact more than just focusing on work.' 

I'm certain it might be because of team biasness and bootlicking since manager claimed my work has no issues during our meeting. 

Fast forward to 3 months later, I'm yet to receive a pip plan or a judgement criteria or any written communication for the same. I'm not sure if I have any job security or when will the pip end (all attempts to get clarity on this were refuted). 

What should I do? Should I wait for things to become clear or quit. It's been only 6 months and I'm worried switching so early will look bad 😔 on my cv. My notice is 90 days.
