Start your own company and become a CTO
CTO is first an foremost a manager. So switching to management is the way.
Other than starting a company which you can do at any time, staying the path is the sure shot way of going about it. This usually looks like:
SE3 → EM → Director → VP → SVP → CTO
Post SE3 role, you can switch to a smaller organisation to quickly "rank up"
