How to get promoted in the same company?

I am 2019 CSE graduate. I used to work in some startup in Bengaluru but during covid when I was home I switched jobs and choose a permanent work from home. The pay was double what I was getting in Bengaluru and I thought Its better to be near parents and work. When I left my job first job I was a Senior SDE already but I switched to this job for a SE role thinking will get promoted later. Since then its been 2 years and I have not got promoted. Manager cancels all the One-One meetings just 10 mins before the call. I asked him last time and he said he is going to recommend me in the next cycle (perhaps next april). But now he will have a new manager under whom we will work tldr; manager is changing. I feel very stuck and regret my past decisions. I am happy with the CTC but its just that I am turning around 5 years of experience but still an SDE.

I have worked countelss nights and weekends to deliver on time and cancelled plans many times. Is it a good time to look elsewhere?

Are you at SDE 1 or 2 level.

If it's SDE 2, it's normal for people to have even 6-7 yoe in some cases. Many top companies don't hire any seniors below 5 yoe, and some even keep the bar at 7/8 yoe.

So unless you're an SDE 1, your current designation seems fine.

That being said, if your manager is a prick and you don't like the work environment, you should cut it at senior level at some other startups for sure.

It's just title, one company's senior is another companies SDE 2. complexity of work, size of the company, scale, etc, matters

Exactly. It's just a stupid title. You get to WFH plus earn double than your blr job. It's a pure win that you're trying to shit on just for a title.

Work here for 2-4 years more and you'll probably get promoted. If you don't, just look elsewhere. Don't kill your golden goose by annoying your manager.

I am currently Software Engineer here. Earlier there was a Associate Software Engineer role too but I think nobody is an associate here anymore. I am not sure if Software Engineer here means SDE 2 but yeah there are folks who did same or less but still Senior Software. Part of the issue I never asked for a promo last year but since everyone got it, I am getting a big fomo now

You get promoted when you do work, don't ask lot of question and don't document. So nobody knows what you did and one day you go to your manager and ask for promotion.

Jokes apart, sometimes you have to justify your new role, why you want to get promoted, how promotion will help you to do better in your productivity, you want to get promoted because you have to lead lot of people and having a title will help you. You want to become a manager because you are managing people and having a title will help you. If it is not a toxic work place the why really matters.
