If the bench period gets longer, usually there is a risk of being placed on the PIP or getting fired due lack of projects, which feels disgusting.

i can feel you bro. once I was unexpectedly on the bench at IBM after a project was cancelled. The IBM bench policy allows employees to remain on the bench for 3 months but it can be extended if you talk to the managers. typically a few weeks to a few months, you should try to get into a project or at least be very visible in the system. That's what worked for me. I went to different managers on a daily basis talking about my skillset and all. I got into a salesforce project in 2.5 months.
