Is getting into IIM to get into PM role justified?

What is the future scope of the PM job role...will it still be relevant after 10 years, Is going to IIMs spending close to 25 lakhs in this economy to get into a PM job role justified?? Context: I know many people will say you don't need IIM to break into PM, But considering I'm a 25 Male, from tier 3 college...currently working as a product designer with 8 lpa...so I think the only way to reach 25-30 lpa in hand by 28 is by joining IIMs

An MBA (IIM or any reputed one) should ideally open up a lot of doors. Breaking into PM role would definitely be easier.

What you would also pick up at MBA would be an understanding of adjacent roles, especially marketing.

If you are open to exploring roles based on your interest rather than just the role itself, MBA would be a good option. If you see yourself only as a PM/SPM, then MBA might not be a great option.

Is it wise to explore different roles while pursuing MBA... knowing that you are a GEM from tier 3 college from product background...& it's really hard to break into High paying roles in Consulting & IB...so shouldn't one focus on maximizing the ROI by taking advantage of previous work ex & get into same domain?? These all are my assumptions I would love to know your thoughts

Started as a developer straight out of college. Shifted into Business Analysis later after 3 years and now working as a product manager at Amex. It's all in your head on how to sell yourself. I've 9 years of experience started with 3.5LPA now at 55LPA.
BE CS&E Tier 3.
MBA isn't the only way to make money or change career path.

Future scope - Totally, see the role/function just took a name in the recent past but people handling all those functional responsibilities were always there.
Even with advances in AI, context driven functional, customer empathising role has to be handled by a human.

When you “this economy”, I would say it’s the best time for upskilling or getting a stamp! For young grads, such depressing scenes are first time. But things were much bad in 2008-09, from there we went to gold rush of 2014.

Try to get into internship opportunities if in case you are sure that you definitely don’t want to be in the current domain. In the current market, it is definitely a risk but if you’re able to take it , it will add a PM experience. Try to convert that internship into PPO. Another way is to get into product analyst role and after working for a year, try for APM roles, in 3 years, there’s a good chance for you to become a PM.

It is very hard to break into product management in tech with just an MBA. Check placements of top IIMs , ISB.

Apart from Amazon that hires MBAs as TPM, etc, most other tech firms don't recruit much. The vast majority of MBA recruiters are from Conglomerate, FMCG, Consulting , etc. Not to mention, PM roles are far less than developers
