Any 40+ Grapeviners here?
Wanted to say Hi, what do you do, how do you see current phase of your life, how do you look at your career so far, and what do you plan to do in next 5 years, etc.
As a poll pointed out most people on platform are from 25-35 age group. We saw the tech bubble and are riding the wave comfortably. What are your thoughts tech industry and job opportunity post 45. My plan is to get FIREd by that time but curious what roles if any do you take on at this age? Do we all take up as managers and become the thing we hate? Any scope of still remaining an IC and getting paid a similar income? I have been mostly working in startups and the oldest guy I have worked with was 37 and I am generally see very few old people in tech, though I have 0 MNC exposure.
In Indian startups, you’ll eventually become a manager after 10-15 yrs of work experience. Rare to see an IC after that. At most startups, there are not big enough problems to justify ICs with 20+ year experience. There could be at some startups, but overall count in the ecosystem is very low. Indian startups need to grow very big in size and complexity of problems they are solving to support very senior ICs.
In MNCs, there are enough opportunities on IC track for decades, in-line with the size of Org and complexity of the problems they solve.
You realise there's an entire world outside Indian startups and startups.
