[Layoffs] Why have we just collectively decided to suck it up rather than retaliate?

It's infuriating how everyone's advice to deal with layoffs is side hustles, wasting your life away to constantly upskill and reducing spending. Basically everyone here is saying "live life like shit to appease your corporate overlords" as if layoffs are OUR fault?

Instead, why aren't we seeing any advice on the lines of:

Build expertise in something while you're an employee and later start your own company/business/consultation on the basis of it. This will increase competition within businesses and will force them to treat their employees like humans. This was kind of the reason why things were generally good for employees from 2021-22 because all the startups popping up increased competition for labour.

Or if your employer lays a bunch of people off and starts giving the rest of you their workload, simply refuse! Don't work extra long or extra hard. Get the employees together collectively and make everyone, or at least the majority refuse to entertain these outlandish demands from your employers. What are they gonna do? Fire you all and lose their business? And if that's not going to work, just do everything very poorly and if you're asked about it, just cite that there is a lack of manpower needed to get quality results.

Basically, why have we collectively decided to take the short end of the stick and make our lives miserable when we should instead force employers to face consequences of THEIR OWN poor strategic planning? Why aren't we even discussing ideas for, let alone working on protecting our own best interests rather than interests of those who are screwing us over?

You know what you are suggesting?

Unions!

Simple fact. Organised effort always has higher bargaining power than decentralised individual effort. 1000 individual employees with similar incentives can be underpaid and overworked by a handful of founders/executives who get higher comp after a layoff. Thats how East India Company was successful too.

In Japan, the unions are so strong that they can fuck the Executives when the share price isn't going up and the management is put on a spot.

But being in a Union has to be Universal & not optional. It's like Game Theory, if anyone stays out, executives will reward them and disintentivise others from unionising.

We can at least start small and then as it catches on, things will change. Like start with your team, when other teams get the idea of how well it is working for you guys, they'll start doing the same too... and so on.

Currently it doesn't seem like the ones staying out are getting rewarded anyway so it's a good time to start retaliating and getting others to join

  1. Crab mindset. 2.Anothe part you highlighted is the effect of contant brainwashing with The concept of "dream career","dream company" which itself is flawed. Rather ask Why do you dream to be a slave under someone. Anyway with dedollarisation the free money will end and small businesses will pop up when the ROI of most engg. colleges will go -ve after no placements and their shutting down.

Dedollarisation is still a long way to go ig. Till then why aren't we realising that the crab mindset is only helping us screw ourselves over? We should spread awareness and try to get us to work in our best interests collectively but instead people are advising everyone to suck it up and live like shit!

Objects in mirror are closer than they appear. And for the crab mindset it need time to rewire brain better earn money to later fund your own business not going in "career" trap.

Can tell you simple reasons :

  1. India cant be unionized in corporates because MNC threaten to leave here.

  2. Because India isnt a middle income country much companies dont have a market here to stay for (discretionary spending)

  3. Lack of innovation Mindset in Indians. We never took risks with money or anything. All of our efforts went into appeasing our society like. Studies, Marriage kids n a predictable strategy.

  4. Government didnt spend much on education thinking an educated indian will topple them for short term vote banks and didnt think about making India a superpower.

  5. Mark this, India will take atleast more 50 years to deliver actual innovation to catch up with china.

  6. R&D Funds should be heavily promoted by government and people with wild and visionary solutions can be made to pit against established businesses bring the incentive for private entities to invest in R&D.

  7. Totally we need a structural treatment for this country to get ahead.

We can't wait for structural change. We have to start something now and the structural change will come eventually. It can start with a change in mindset which would happen if more and more people discuss how to retaliate against unfair practices by employers instead of accepting that everything is shit and just sucking up to whatever shit they are made to go through.

Companies can easily reward the fencesitters n betrayers. Lack of unity in corporate workforce and the feeling that unions dont belong to corporates !!!

because the world doesn't works the other way.. it like saying why r farmers poor why can't they all sell it high price only and make more profit..? or why can't people stop buying iphones?

BaatMaan
BaatMaan

Correct me if I'm wrong but if farmers were more educated/aware, they could avoid middlemen and get better value for themselves. Right? What has iphones got to do with this?? Also people can stop buying iphones from tomorrow if they wanted to, how would anyone be affected by not buying iphones?

You sound like it's just minor inconveniences that prevent the world from working the other way

if famers were educated then they probably do a better profitable job or become a part of the system itself and exploit other farmers
