Moving from Delhi to Mumbai(F23):: Can anyone help?
I’m a 23yo girl moving from Delhi to Mumbai for a job. I’ve always lived in Delhi and don’t know anyone in Mumbai, plus Marathi is totally new to me. My company might provide housing, but I’m still a bit nervous.
What should I know about living in Mumbai? What are the pros and cons?
Any tips would be super helpful. Don’t be shy, okay? :P
- Chill place. No language issues, everyone speaks Hindi.
- As for housing - find a place near to your office. - Local try mat karna, non-mumbaikar are not used to it and can never be.
- Flats are small and prices are so don’t expect big houses and never expect a balcony.
- Auto works everywhere - Sab meter se chalte hai…no need to book for Ola or uber.

In Mumbai, most folks are generally helpful, polite and mind their own business. The culture is not flashy and status seeking, so keep that in mind. You might run into someone in humble attire travelling in Local train but he might be worth Crores. You wudnt have to worry abt people problems, they are nice.
Get a place so that your daily commute is as convenient as possible. Houses are small, dingy and costly. The norther and Easter you move, the cheaper it gets. Find something which is one bus/train away from your office location. Driving is a bad option, cars are least practical.
You can get by with Hindi/English in most cases, but Marathi is easiest to learn for Hindi speakers.

First of all, Welcome to aamchi Mumbai Many of the generic points are covered in other comments. Let me add a few based on experience of a Gurgaon girl shifted to Mumbai.
Weather : Hot and Humid. Don't bring any warm clothes. There is no winter. Bring lots of napkins(to wipe that sweat). Superior air quality. You can breathe without 😷 (atleast yet). Monsoons are heavy and you will hate it for the first month/year.
Food - Maharashtrian cuisine is simple and tasty. You will find Vadapav, Pav Bhaji, Upma Poha, Misal at every nook and corner. City is cosmopolitan, so all cuisines are available and enough options for veg/nonveg. However, You will miss Delhi street food.
Public Transport - Its cheap and superfast but highly crowded. World famous local trains are not for beginners. Autos and Taxis work on meter. So no bargaining or overcharging. But, be ready to face rejections, lots of them 😪
Housing - You will get matchbox sized house for price of a Delhi Villa. If you plan to move in with furniture, better get a degree first in space planning. City has a stark divide in eastern and western suburbs. West being more affluent than the east.
People: They mind their own business. So much so that, no one would bother to help unless you ask. No hostility to any community or background (few exceptions).
No one will say 'Tu jaanta nai mera baap kaun hai' 😂 Don't get offended if you hear ocassional marathi gaali. Get used to hearing lots of Sorry.
Amenities: 24x7 electricity unlike gurgaon/Bangalore and Seasonal water cuts( in few areas) .
Cost of living: Everything from cylinder gas to booze is expensive.
Tips
Dont call locals 'bhaiyaa'. Instead call bhau, dada, tai, didi, etc
Don't be depressed if you don't find anyone to socialize. People are too busy working but find enough time on weekends.
You might feel a bit lost due to fast pace nature. Eventually get used to it.
Don't ask any boy 'jevlas ka'. He might mistaken you for flirting 😬

As a proud maharashtrian & mumbaikar... I recommend you consider this reply as an official ans for your question! & Yes.. never ask a guy 'jevlas ka' unless u like him😂

Try to find a place that is affordable and try to find flatmates.

If someone from Mumbai was moving to Delhi , they need to worry. Mumbai is safe, people mind their own business, no harsh summers or winters. People are much nicer. It's definitely very professional. Enjoy your time here.

I moved to Mumbai in the last 6 months. Here is my 2 cents. People are mostly friendly, you might get few rude encounters but that's everywhere in the world. Transport is the best, Auto and Cab are available on meter and they know every location. I'm from south and I'm able to manage with my Hindi, Shouldn't be a problem for you. Getting a good house is tough, if your company is providing better for you. You can try local train but only during non peak times. Can't travel between 8AM to 10AM and 5PM to 7PM unless you are Mumbaiker. Also, almost everything you need will be available at a Retail store near you and that too very affordable.

Just take a place near office.

Mumbai people are extremely friendly you can ask for a favour it's safe also :)

Mumbai is Safe for women in night time also. Most of social media influencers you can see in mumbai. Make a friends circle so you can explore mumbai and have memories in mumbai.

you will only find it better than delhi...
