my uncle's layoff story, being loyal is a joke!
this weekend, I got to meet my uncle and got the know that we was layoff, he super loyal and hardworking always put office/work first and never taken any breaks for 35yrs+ & worked continuously in one large UK MNC companies(for 25yrs). when he got 3x better offer 10 years back they told him we will cover your future and you reach the greatest heights etc.
but now they just layoff him with a single email, just like that. and now he is telling no point in being loyal to the company, just do your job, if no growth or hike, leave that company and it's their problem.
my uncle is heartbroken about the fact that he wasted so much time, for his age n experience he should have become a member of the board but instead laid him off.. sometimes foreigners r right with work n life balance than us(indian). we need to leave the slave mentality..

I scrutinize the team/ manager and the opportunity during the interview as much as they scrutinize me. This helped me avoid surprises and stick for a longer term. My plan generally is to stick for a minimum 4 years.

After 4years if I am still continuing I would retrospect to see if it is still a better opportunity for my career. Of not I switch. The only thing I am loyal to is to my career.

What are the parameters you use to do the same ?
Would love to get some insights.
Not just tech, This is pretty much the case in manufacturing industry,
My dad and his brother are 5x apart in their income (same industry) with dad doing job hopping, both being impacted in covid because š taking care of employees.
My takeaway = loyalty is MYTH, labour is labour,
hop where you get paid more.
