Personal laptop vs Company one’s

Hi everyone,

I’m curious—do you use your personal laptop or your company-issued one for personal tasks? I’m considering buying a new 15” MacBook Air (around 70k INR with an exchange bonus), but I’m wondering if it’s worth it since I can do almost everything on the company laptop(MacBook pro m1).

Is it really necessary to spend that amount? What do you all think? Do you prefer using your company laptop or your personal one for personal tasks?

Recently, our company has been preparing for an IPO, so they’ve started tracking activity and blocking some sites. I’m unsure if it’s still wise to use the company laptop for personal stuff.

P.S. If you do use a personal laptop for certain tasks, why not use the company one for those instead?

It will work till your org finds you useful, if they decide otherwise can be used against you.

Never use company laptop for personal work no matter how trivial it is.

A senior fellow who used to bring lot of business for company was fired in a day for using official laptop for personal work, apparently market was going down and there was no growth in business and he was not useful for company. He was on very high package

I use personal laptop for personal stuff Yes we can do in office laptop also. But some companies restrict the access and if you have to access something like that then you need your own laptop.

If you are jobless for some reasons then how do you prepare for the interviews when you don’t have office laptop? Plus you won’t have much money during that time to buy a laptop. You want to save as much as possible.
Also like you mentioned, monitoring is other problem even if it’s allowed.

Your current company may not have all the restrictions. When you switch to new company, you might face this issues.

So point is at some point in your career, you might need personal laptop. So better buy laptop with little high end configuration that comes for around 8-10 years .

Another layoff at the most overvalued unicorn startup.

First round happened in March. 130-140 engg. Around 40 engg were fired. Then some silent layoffs happened in different teams like hr. Then Few good enggs left the company. This week another round happened with around 20-25 enggs
