Questions every Talent Leader should ask themselves

  • Do you know what each recruiter is working on and the daily challenges the recruiters face, beyond the weekly/ quarterly numbers? Can you name three specific obstacles your recruiters face with hiring managers right now?
  • Are you building an employer of choice, creating the noise about your org with your recruiters - or delegating it as "their job"?
  • When was the last time you went through your own interview process undercover?
  • Are your so called "talent strategies a regurgitation of what worked last year, or are you actually pioneering something new?
  • Do you have any evidence that your orgs "Talent Density" went up other than X people hired from Y premium companies and Z Pedigree.
  • Are you prioritising recruiter development, or is training just "if time allows"?
  • Are you still hands on? Do you make cold calls?
  • Do you have a pulse yourself on candidate feedback - or is that left to some survey dashboard?
  • Are you actively PERSONALLY engaged in talent forecasting, or is it a reactive scramble?
  • Are you empowering recruiters to push back on unrealistic expectations - or just passing down directives? Or is your playbook ego massage, bandaid and damage control?
  • Are you PERSONALLY involved in crafting the story that sells your company to top talent - or do you leave that to job postings?
  • Do you make it a point to PERSONALLY talk to every candidate who drops your offer?
  • What’s your plan if half your recruiting team leaves tomorrow?
  • Would you hire you to lead your talent team today?
  • When was the last time you lost sleep over a bad hire?
  • Have you accepted that your team's mental health and burnout rate is "just part of the job"?
  • Do you take personal accountability for attrition/inability to hire in your org - or blame "the market"?

I know only some.. who do. I also know a lot who don't. PS: If you took this test - How many of these boxes did you honestly check off? If it’s less 5, you’re not leading talent - you’re a passenger, not the driver
