Salary Cut

3 years post-MBA exp. Currently at INR 35+ LPA. Offer in impact consulting at INR 23 LPA. Should I take it? Joining in Jan'24. Reason for switch - can't tolerate my toxic manager anymore. Have already put down my papers. Line of thought:

  1. Take it - Something is better than nothing. At least paisa aate rahega.
  2. Wait - Once I go at a lower package, difficult to demand a hike on my current one.
  3. Take it, don't mention it - Companies will negotiate hard to lowball me if they know I am not working (gets worse if the LWD of my current company and the time am applying have a huge gap).

Money matters to me. But have been introspecting a lot. Will appreciate realistic input from the community.

Three of my friends work at with the amount of paycut you are taking per annum.

They have a package of 3LPA- Capegemini

I think this puts stuff into perspective for your question. Idk how it will help , just wanted this information out there

Doesn’t help. Have worked hard to get here. Won’t let you downplay me. No offence.

Man, you totally understood me. I was trying to tell you do not lose money as you have worked harder for the money you are earning, Do not get a pay cut ! Idk why you thought I was suggesting otherwise

That's a very big pay cut , you should rather wait out for better opportunities taking such a huge paycut will at least put you two years behind in your career.

I totally understand this.. and that’s what i have been introspecting.. honestly, if i get something better before joining the consulting firm, will take the better offer.. else, take this one and keep looking out.

Question is, if you wait do you have enough funds to support expenses? Yes, then don't accept this low ball

But If he keeps waiting and it takes 3-4 months won't the next company try to lowball him ?

Not necessarily

If money matters the most to you then don’t take it. You would have this constant thought that you came on a paycut. It will ruin your state of mind and probably others around you as well.

Is it possible to get a strategy consulting offer? You already have one in impact so I think it should be possible? The growth will be great I've heard.

It’s like going back to square 1. Strategy consulting with Big4 refuse kia tha - that was my campus offer.. post MBA from an old IIM.. life is funny.. i get what you are saying but after so many startups, am kinda untouchable for the big firms..

Ah.. understandable. Hmm.. this is a complex situation with no easy way out. Best wishes! That's all I can say.

How do know if your new manager is not as toxic or more than your current manager?

FluffyPanda
FluffyPanda

I know when I experience. Isn’t that better than staying in the shithole? If your point is to learn n deal better in such situations, point taken.. but can’t stay here.

JazzyWalrus

I understand my question sounded critical 😓. But my point was that if you decide on taking the pay cut for the sake of your mental health, do make sure that the new manager is not a toxic one. Maybe speak with some ex-employees of the new company.

Bro that is more than 30% downgrade in the package. Try to find a different position in the company itself or wait for a better opportunity.

Internal switch isn’t possible.

Once you've decided to leave, leave.

Focus on your mental Health. See if you like the new role - once you're comfortable pushing yourself again, go for higher package... Don't stay here too long in that case. However, if you want to stay ...and feel lower money didn't really put such a big dent and the trade-off was worth it... Good for you 🙂
