The problem isn’t that our tax rules are too lax, the problem is that 95% of our people are too poor to be worth taxing.

Inagine if that 1% of 5% starts paying taxes, that too would make an immediate impact

We have a lot more indirect taxes though, collection from just income tax itself is fairly low.

As an employee of working class we do pay taxes but if more % starts paying taxes ,

How are we getting this data? Also, how are we to improve this unless we uplift more people into taxable segment? We would also have to tax the segments which are tax free. Like taxing agriculture as long as it's under taxable segment. Taxing even politicians, etc

Besides, this is a small portion of total taxes govt collects. Govt makes a lot of money from taxes of Petrol (for every 100 we pay, 67 is tax)

It's strange how when it comes to income tax, we immediately focus on developed nations but we never focus on the already earned tax money and where is it going? Do we really need 20k crore central vista project? Should we not see to it that existing taxes are well spent especially on improving public schools and Healthcare? I for one would want my future children to have good education without buring my pockets after already paying boat loads of taxes (direct, indirect, etc)

Tax evasion, a national sport here. More people need to be dragged into the tax net. No free lunches, folks!
