Why you aren't being promoted (a 2 stage dilemma)

Hey folks, so I will share everything that I've gathered from getting promoted twice and learning a tonne from my director and VP (on how to get promoted).

You can perhaps give this post a like so I get more of those grapes. Leave a comment if you have doubts and I will try to answer

So essentially there's only two stages of failure when you're trying to get promoted. I will call these Stage 1 and Stage 2

Stage 1: Your Manager/Seniors doesn't even think about you (You are invisible)

If this is where you are. You will never get promoted. Unless you do the following:

  1. Showcase your impact actively to your manager, organization and peers going out of your way. For example, send an email across the org detailing some work that you recently did
  2. Develop relationships. With your manager, but also your peers and if possible your skip levels and your manager's peers.
  3. Become one of the top 10% more 'visible' employees in the team. This could be just visibility for organizing some team activity or something else that's small, but gets you notices
  4. Just ask your manager for it (promotion). Duh....

Stage 2: You are being considered but didn't make 'the cut'

  1. Ensure that your work was clearly documented and understood by the leadership
  2. Ensure you give your manager enough 'material' to advocate for you and your work 3.Ensure you are actually working at the 'next level'
  3. Ask your manager if there was something wrong with your conduct if they work was at par
  4. Ask your manager whether you were not given a promotion for 'leadership capability' related reasons. This is simple to fix. It usually improves with things I identified in stage 1.

Hope that helps.

No matter where you are, stage 1 or stage 2. Just be a visible, high performing, superstar and you will get that promo.

You sound like a very senior leader who has been thought a lot..

Personally looks like your formula is a lot about being extroverted and vying for visibility within the organization. While this works this is not for introverted people.

Being extrovert isn't always required for being visible. What you need is showing your impact which can be done with textual communications as well, like regular updates to your manager and mails to all stakeholders with status updates/progress. Even if you are facing an issue, bring it to light. This will make people notice you.

Making relationships with team members doesn't mean you have to talk about your personal life or theirs. How you treat them when they come to you for help is more than enough to build the bonds.

Verbal conversations are inevitable with your manager, and you should tell them elaborately on how you solved something. Sharing the BTS details let's them know of your efforts and creates appreciation. This gets you discussed with the upper management and paves the path for your growth.

Quite true , does nt apply for sincere introverted people who are behind the camera but still do remarkable work , self marketing is a special skill by itself

My theory is more simple - If they think you will leave the organization, they will promote. If they think you will not/cannot leave that easily , the will not promote.

You knowledge, skillset, attitude, visibility is all just BS HR feeds the employee.

Yeah, got hikes and a promotion three times in consecutive quarters where it was only possible to get once a yr.

I was at Stage 1 for a very long time at the start of my career. All the points mentioned were done by me, even though I didn't get a promotion. When I asked my manager about it, he lied that yes I'd be considered only to know that it was a false hope. I guess, it also depends a lot on the manager if he is "willing" to promote you or not. Many people just don't work, but still are promoted only because they are the apple of their eye.

You forgot to add an important ingredient. If you are not a threat to the manager himself, then you will get promoted ). But if the insecure prick feels they would be easily replaced/overshadowed/upstaged by you, they will move mountains to not promote you.
