Is it right to initiate salary hike discussion with Manager

Hi all. I am working in a small startup as a product designer and it's a month I completed 1yr in this company and I thought on completion of a year, they will talk about the hike, but they are not. I don't know if I should initiate this discussion because of the scene here:

Company is very small with 2 developers and me as a designer in the tech team. So 2 months back I handed over designs for Devs and they are working on it and it's still in progress. Now since there were no other projects they were giving me small tasks like a few graphic design works until Devs complete that and we discuss about next project. So since 2 months I don't have a very occupied day except PPT, graphic design, social media post works and last month I completed 1 year.

I am not sure when the next project is going to come and in this phase when there's less work, I don't know is it right to ask for the hike? I want the hike badly but when I have less work as of now, how do I ask. Is it even right or should I just not ask for it

People kindly guide me πŸ™πŸ™

Discussing with your manager is the best thing you can do to your career. But there are so many caveats to make sure it’s the right context and discussion.
You need to understand what you need from your manager and what managers needs from you.
Balance both of them in such a way that you always gain something every day.
I know it sounds simple but you can always reach out

Thank you for your response. Yup, that's right. In terms of expectations, when I said I have completed 1 year in the company, he just congratulated me and didn't talk anything else.

Regarding work, I have been doing whatever they are asking for and haven't said no. I was previously from digital marketing field, they are asking me for seo and basic ads work which I am doing as well because there's no much design work at this point of time.

But I feel they are not sure if the next project is going to take off and if not, I will be just maintaining the current designs based on customer feedback. So there's no much product design heavy task. But in terms of company's finance, they are getting good clients and business is growing upwards.

I think it's time I change company, if they don't have much design work. But I am not sure how long that would take, so should I just be okay with the current pay ! I don't know
