Document the incompetence of PM in public (Slack, emails with key stakeholders), however, do it in professional language. Think of your own time as a company resource, and the PM wasting company resources by doing multiple revisions after the build has started. Ask publicly, "Had we not spent 3 days on writing code that had to be deleted, we could have rather spent those 3 days on doing xyz project. how can we as a team, avoid such wastage and rather deliver more value to the company". This will make you a dangerous person to mess with, the PM will be forced to bring better formed requirements to you, and the stakeholders will look at you as a responsible employee who is looking out for company's interests.

If it has got to this point, you can start working exactly 9hrs and clocking out. What happens later is their business. Meanwhile look for another job in the remaining time freed up by this. They won't fire you, they can't fire you if you really are putting this much efforts and having impact.

Your PM's behavior is quite concerning. Raise this to your reporting manager, and call out how this is affecting your confidence in the team and the company. I understand start-ups can be dynamic and gut-driven, but if it happens too often, you have a terrible PM.

1. Set 1:1 with PM, clearly state out your concerns and the fact that this will not fly. If this works then great, start checking out of work by 7 PM 2. If 1 does not work, then escalate it to your manager. If your manager is competent, then it'll be sorted 3. If even 2 doesn't work then try to find other people that are having a similar experience with this PM. Form a group and escalate to super manager/VP. If the company gives even the smallest of fucks, then this should work out 4. Resign bro (with or without offer depending on your condition), if even 3 does not work.

Same story of almost every other startup. Also it depends on how your engineering manager is dealing with the product guys

Is there no TL for your team? Why is the PM talking to you directly, TLs are well equipped to handle their half knowledge.

Start with worst case scenario. 1. If you continue in same situation your body and mind will give up and you end you in hospital. 2. If that end up as b.p. or diabetes or other physical illnesses., that is somewhat allow to Work. 3. Think about mental health issues you will llose everything, job, family and place in society. With choice of words you have used, you are moving to point 3. Best think to deal just say no to him which is not correct. Complaining to his manager will not solve any thing as you will be seen as cry baby. Worst in this case is they may remove from project, which is far better than above cases.

this happens with me sometimes while working in collaboration with other teams. so, this is the hack i use: in the standup in front of whole team i clearly mentioned that I blocked by that person for this much time. so, this will effect in the project deadline, sometimes I even create a subtask of the jira ticket and mentioned by extended bandwidth used. (make sure do not use the words like may be, possibly while making this statement). This always works for me. 😉😉

@AgitatedPot - I am a dev who moved to pm 1. document everything. Tell them how much time it might take. Question back everything in a formal tone. 2. If they text you beyond your office hours, reply back next day. Set boundaries. 3. If there are instances where you are deleting code/ refactoring. Write rca stating how things could have been better. Bring you engineering hierarchy in confidence. 4. But trust me requirements are never frozen because the customer expectations would change, if you are a seasoned pm you figure out what exactly is the problem and have that feature built but usually most end up being feature factory. If you are really interested to learn business side of things maybe ask him to add you on calls. Remember its always sde supremacy not thw other way around 😛

Say fuckoff, professionally. Learn to say no. Extremely uncomfortable, but highly effective. Say no to all the meetings that can happen without you and the ones that need you, send your team lead.

1. I would suggest just have a call with the PM and try to explain him the scenario. 2. On the other hand start documenting the requirement changes and with each change write it publicly on slack mentioning requirment has changed and explicitly mentioing how much more time it would now need and highlight it to you lead/EM. 3. If PM is giving timeline on his own talk publicly on slack with your estimate and it will take this much time and tag the PM also there. 4. If EM does not help escalate to your skip. 5. Last resort quit
