[Thread] What is the best thing your manager ever told you?
To me? "Congratulations! We are giving you a one-time cash bonus of 1L." This was for a deliverable I ideated and executed end to end. Unfortunately, it was recognition too late because I was already planning to resign, which I did in the next week. 😂🤡
I joined a company after getting some bad performance comments from prev company. In my older the reason behind poor outcome was - manager. During my exit, he confessed the same that he wasn’t able to put required time/efforts. Most probably he was one who threw me in front of the bus.
Joining a new company with that baggage scares the shit out of anyone. I worked hard and delivered something big in first 6 months. The comment from VP levels was - “This is such a turnaround (of a prev lagging product)”. The mail was cascaded to CXOs and org re-initiated focus on the product.
That day, I gained my lost confidence and decided not to let anyone else control my career.
VP of my org referred to me as one of the best communicators in the team of 100+ folks in his All-Hands, then proceeded to ask me for feedback on his session during the same All-Hands.

Got 2 spotlight award (500€ each). But i am still heavily underpaid.
Btw where are you heading too.
Randomly got a ping one day saying "You're the best" - this was at an old job
That was very much out of the blue on a week where I wasn't in my best spirits. Very nice of them.

What do you do professionally?

1) when you look for gold you don't find it everytime. Sometimes you will miss and sometimes you will get it. Just accept and move on quick. - was said when I was down saying I didn't do impactful work for last 4 months
2) looking at a problem is not about identifying where is the biggest spike, it is about solving where it impacts more - was said when I was focusing on something small but flashy instead of big and more impacting
3) it is always good to gel up with your managers - on a drinking night with manager & his manager
4) I am asking for qc checklist not because I want it but rather because tomorrow you would be confident that you have done it right. - when I was showing no motivation to do qc

"You have a good eye for video editing and animation"
Probably the first person to recognise my knack for video. Pushed me hard to work on videos when I wasn't even confident about it myself. Now it's one of my most valuable skills, helped me make a few viral videos, got an award for an ad campaign I hand-animated for a freelance project.
I still don't use it as often or polish it as much because I don't get enough time, but it's still very useful especially now in the age of short form content.
One of the best bosses I had in my career.

"Don't put so much effort, you'll raise the expectations for everyone around you"
You've outgrown this job and we can't promote you for reasons beyond my control.... Time for you to move on

She said, she has crush on me, I melted 🫠.
But i was weird, had no idea how to talk 😂 to a girl in this regard.
My manager and I had to go to a client location for a meeting. Client had an office just 1 km away from our office but we were asked to come to another office which is a bit far. It was raining at the time. And people were taking time to join so manager and I took a 15 min coffee break.
With no context, I asked my manager, “why are we here?” My intention was, we have an office nearby, why did we had to travel this far. He replied, “because you are the best in my team”
That was such a sudden reply I fumbled for a minute and told him my intention behind the question.

Are you interested in going sometime in the USA?
Never burn your bridges when you leave a company. You never know who can pull you out of the mud in the future.
Chaudhary mat ban !
Do your own work first , don't try to do that of others for them
During COVID my grandmother and uncle got admitted to hospital and this was during the second wave. There were a lot of shortages for ICU beds, and I had to stay at the hospital to take care of the my uncle who hadn't gotten the ICU bed.
My manager said don't worry about work I will take care of it and you can join back once everything is settled. And the best thing was he was contacting hospitals to check if any ICU beds were available. This made me stay in the company longer.

Ramdomly shouting for and every thing under the sun and shutting down validated hypotheses due to his "market knowledge".
Inspired me to get out of that shit and start my own business
"I want you to become one of the best Product Managers in the coming decade."
I asked him hesitantly if he was saying this sarcastically or not. If not why did he think I have the potential.
He just said that "in my 17 years of work experience as a product leader, I have rarely seen the ownership you take for your products. That's why I have given the toughest product to you"
Btw he is a Co-Founder too.
