Founder tries to take advantage of software intern. Intern fights back. š„
Ninja technique to get your work items done without paying people to get them done.
Also, making people work for you to give them the opportunity to work for you.

I think it's a valid ask. If it takes certain hours of efforts, those could be awarded with a stipend. But, she should've called it out while setting expectation call that happened.
Itās actually kinda insane how these stealth mode founders make someone work for an internship assignment which is supposed to be done by full time employees.
Absolutely! They think they are doing a favour by hiring interns in this market

Beggars shouldn't be choosers
you want the job ? you have to go through the process
show me one company which pays people to take interviews, whatever may be the process
Every great startup i have interviewed with and they asked me to do an assignment, I always negotiated a deal on
Number of Expected hours x Negotiated Hourly rate
If you donāt ask you donāt get.

Stipend for Internship Interview Assignment ā

Well, most startupās donāt have the luxury of teaching interns and provide training before interns can start working. They need someone who can start working as soon as they join and there is no better way to test it than to give them an assignment. A properly designed assignment gives better insight into how prepared the candidate is for the job he/she is applying for than a simple interview with 2-3 tech rounds and 1-2 culture fit rounds.(Hot Take)
As for someone who is applying for the intern role, they should take it up as a learning opportunity and not tie it with money (seems counterintuitive, right?). Reason being they are joining as an intern, a role that is not supposed to be of as high value as that of a full time employee. Intern roles are more for learning and less for earning. I am not saying that there shouldnāt be any compensation for it, but that should not be a primary motivation for internship, let alone the interview for an internship.

And nothing provides a better learning opportunity for interns than a startup.
your statement contradicts.... you want an intern who wants to learn and the same intern to start contributing as soon as they join. if you want straight away contribution to your project then hire them as an employee and not as an intern.

"I would prefer AI to take over all jobs"
My brother in Christ, AI ain't free. How you gon afford AI when you can't afford to pay an intern? ššš¤¦š»āāļø
2 months back one company in blore asked me for 2nd round f2f interview which is 25 kms away, I spend money, time and efforts, it took whole day and I cracked interview.
HR asked again to come for 3rd round, which will take another full day. I dumped the company as not possible to take back to back leaves while working.
They didnāt pay me for my travel and food.
Surprisingly, they donāt think it is not right to call someone f2f twice frequently with no allowance.
All completed assignment have to be paid based on the quality of work done, and then continue the interview process.
I recently interviewed for a browser company. They literally asked me to integrate Google's search console into a search engine design of their company. They wanted the search bar to not have any visible signs of "Google owns this". I went through the entire documentation and found out there is a way, but Google will still enforce their marks some or the other way. I said this is what it is. And they were like "Oh, you seem to have failed at implementing what we tasked you with". Got rejected. Before the call ended, when I was asked if I had any questions or feedback, I asked the manager to share me the steps or the implementation itself so that I can learn and they were like "no we can't. Sorry, its private" and abruptly ended the call. Never heard back from them.
A month later, one of their employees changed jobs. I happen to be their connection. So, I asked them how was the work in their prev org. And he literally said not to join them even if they offered faang level salaries. Upon further conversation, got to know how crazy and toxic the entire founding team was. Their aim was to replace every other search engine with their own. I said I was asked given a similar assignment in the interview process. That's when he revealed that the assignment was like a free thing as they had no intentions of hiring anyone. They were low on cash. Had burnt a lot unnecessarily. And they wanted to figure out a way to build their MVP as their investors were starting to be a "pain in the ***" for the founders.
I felt "Thank god I failed at that interview"

Assignment rounds is a page copied from European startups playbook. What you don't realize is the cultural difference. Few of the startups will have you arrive at the office and then give the interview but will compensate you for the day spent and travel
