I turned down a prestigious MBA to join a startup, and now my parents think I'm throwing my life away. How do you handle family pressure in your career decisions?

Repeat after me: Only losers do an MBA. People who 's great career path ahead of them, don't need to do MBA. MBA I itself doesn't have any value. It opens doors for you. If you can do it yourself, why waste time and money. - Ex MBA

Did the exact same thing Gave up tier 1 MBA offer for a role in a tech company. It worked out well for me. Parents found it to be weird, but a few years later, they now trust me with things. They understood that I know some things better and will take the right calls. Note: my relationship had never strained. Just that they questioned. I hope the same happens with you, it's the best feeling.

You can do MBA and work at startup as a consultant/intern. MBA will open many short term and long terms doors for you. I can suggest a better arrangement where you don't need to sacrifice one for another. Feel free to DM

Turned down MBA right after engineering and joined a start up. Soon became part of the top management team. Start up went bankrupt, worked without pay for a few months. Had to quit after I started defaulting on bills I had to restart my career, compromised on pay and finally in a job that pays me alright. @GullibleOil indeed College name matters a lot. Those who don't go to top colleges will definitely REGRET doing MBA. Infact in 80-90% of colleges are WASTE of both TIME , MONEY. @DaringTrain will not share his college name for the same reason...lol

Been there man: gave GMAT, got a good score, was all ready to apply for M7 bschools with a above average odds for conversion - while working on apps realised I actually didn’t know why I was doing this, said fuck it and ditched those plans. Parents were ofcourse confused that what just happened but I think by now they’ve realised I know what I am doing so they know I’ll figure out and do just fine. Just sit down and explain it in very very dumb language why you did what you did - it works more often than not :)

If you've gotten an offer from IIM BLACKI, FMS Delhi, or ISB - reconsider your decision. These schools provide a great great alumni network and would help you 10x the outcomes at your startup. I'm an alum from one of these schools, and working at a startup. I rely vvv heavily on my alum network for the success of my startup and it's proving to be the best ROI ever.

You did a mistake. I am working at a reputed bank. Seen folks with 3-4 years experience working as directors over here who are from top B schools Which takes normal people atleast 15-20 years to become a director. One from top B schools can easily become a VP within 5-7 years.

If you still have the offer to join mba, go for it. Or give an year for startup and see how it goes. If you to think you can make post mba salary in startup and make it big. Continue in tech. If not, go do that mba or abroad masters. In the long run, these degrees do help. At very high chances you will be able to study when young vs old with responsibilities.

Bhai startup vs mba ye sab kuch nahi hone wala see many politicians and uneducated people doing better than you guys ...kuch bda karna ke liye common sense chahiye aur life experience...tier 1 is rotten concept in india it creates divide and disparity in society that's it ...

Look, each to their own. My MBA opened up opportunities that I may not have gotten without it, but there is no way to know for sure. Take a decision based on your mission term career and financial goals. MBA isn’t cheap and neither is being jobless after a year cos the startup collapsed.

Another nugget - The really good people who actually went for an MBA are secure about themselves. They don't feel the urge to fight it out with me on an anonymous platform. And definitely don't feel the need to namedrop it 5 seconds into the conversation. And the people fight me - They are the ones, 10 minutes after getting into a BSchool - They buy the shirt, hoodie adn trackpants with the institute logo and then make it a point to wear it outside of the campus. My dad is smart but he was in the job market 30 years ago. He has an outdated view of the world. I realised very early that while they have good intent, they don't understand the variables right now.

Parents just don't want to see u fail. That's there only thought process. That's why the try to convince you to take path with lesser risk. Once u start earning decent they dont care if its via mba or startup . You can go for mba anytime.

You need to back yourself up. If you're clear with your thought process to go with this decision, back yourself up. Keep taking smart decisions that align with your values and eventually your family will turn around and see the merit. Till then, you just have to manage their emotions somehow. I get it, it's difficult. But what's more difficult is to face the regret later on that you made important life choices based on external pressure and didn't give yourself the chance you deserved.
