Well, North bore the brunt of brutal invasions. There's a reason southern states still retain a lot more Hindu traditions compared to North. Also the difference in aggression levels.

Unfortunately, throughout our history - Mughals liked demolishing Hindu temples in their past time. The fact that there are more temples as you go down south is because Northern rulers literally acted as a shield while defending a considerably fragmented Hindu culture across the country. They were pretty successful at doing this but some collateral damage was unavoidable.

Have you noticed, more the temples less likely they are to being intolerant bhakts. True Hindus are compassionate and tolerant.
