Not surprised. Happened to me also in a previous job and many of my peer seniors incl directors and managers who I thought had a lot of clout and connections.

Problem with a very long tenure is people take a while to get into interview mindset, figure out what the industry uses vs internal tooling etc.

I graduated in 22 and it’s been a year since I joined my first company. Considering the current market situation, switching the company doesn’t seem to be an easy task. I got the opportunities to work on 5 projects in this company and unarguably learned a lot. But now they have put me in the support project saying that they don’t have projects. Wouldn’t lie they laid off approx 1k employees, I and few others are the only saved ones. Would it be a good idea if I stay in this company for one more year while slowly preparing for the switch utilising the amount of time I’d get being in this support project or rush myself to change the company?

How long should a fresher stay in the first company?

I used to work in a start up in Bangalore, they overhired in 2022 and overpaid the freshers, more than the experienced engineers were getting paid.
To fix this put 30% of workforce on pip, laid off 20% I was one of them. 2 months later, they did open layoffs, did it again in 2 months, and one of my friends there heard the founders cracking a laugh that even the investors wouldn't have expected us to do this so fast.

I joined another company, they lost the client I was hired for, and few more clients, I was told they will have to do layoffs and my name is in the list. So they asked me to resign and I refused by saying we'll consider a last working day, if I get an offer I'll resign otherwise anyway I'll have to be laid off and they agreed. This happened one month after I had joined this company ( also a startup ).


So, being laid off once was already a big enough punch of reality, with an education loan on my head.
I joined another company and got laid off again. Tough shit.


I ended up getting an offer before my lwd.
I am not from any IIT, I am not an exceptional engineer. I am very bad interviews, my resume usually doesn't get shortlisted.

Sheer volume of effort I put made the impact on me getting a job.
Right now I am the best job of my career, with a better management.


Trying to say, it's a tough time. But you'll get through it.

Got hints that I’ll be fired

I presented them with an option of taking a lower level position

The next lower level options top band was 40 percent less than my current pay

I took the demotion given the market and personal circumstances.

 If I search for opportunities outside I would have to ask for 60 percent hike

I guess, my salary is corrected forever 😪

I am hearing that some companies are laying off again? So is this a good time to switch or just stay wherever I am. That being said, I am not happy with my CTC and looking for a hike. And my current CTC is ~26 so how much hike can I expect if I do a switch?

I have worked in two startups as backend engineer and here I only did the given work and didnt proactively contribute much to the products. I have been given promotion to SDE 2 without any salary hike. I recently got laid off and I feel like I am not eligible for SDE 2 interviews. I can clear dsa rounds but suck in design rounds.  I got a job with same salary at a service based company and I am thinking to join and then prepare to be better at design. is it a good decision? should I join it?

I got layed off 2022 Dec , Consulted at a startup for 3 months , started with a large org with a paycut early 2023 and got promoted within a year of joining.
Not boasting here but just know that bad tines are momentary and good times will happen sooner or later .

I (23 grad) working with a service based company, around 5 months exp, got an offer from Swiggy for a contract role. Is it worth joining Swiggy right now amidst all the recession and layoffs chaos?

Lets discuss!!! I will go first -

I quit my last organisation (a famous UPI company) in 2020 because, they still are in old technology. No cloud computing, no kubernates, no terraform. Their entire baremetal infra are in 2 DCs (Mumbai and Bangalore). Leadership ideas are outdated. I was very much bored and looking for a change.

Why did you resign?

Amount of effort i put and the salary i got was not proportional. 14 hrs to get 30k salary as a fresher. I had understood that I deserve better - thus i moved to get better pay and better wlb (which I got in swiggy)

So last year March i got laid off. Was there with the company for more than 5 years. Was told they are restructuring the org. I was devastated, though i wanted to move much before, but company did not cut pay or jobs during the peak pandemic, so i thought ill stick around for some more time. Next thing i know boom gone. I have taken a break since then almost did nothing.it's more than a year but anxiety of shitty boss, long hours work is hitting me even harder as i apply for jobs. Don't know how the market is going treat me.

Has anybody here experienced a layoff that has kept up your love for the company.

I’ve had a bad one that was done in 30 mins with a meagre severance and assets/accesses removed in 10 mins with a legal binding about a non social media disclosure 

Not mentioning which company for obvious reasons.
