Symptoms of being ‘too nice’ to people at work:
- Overuse of gratitude words like Thank you, please, could you, kindly, etc on all forms of communication at work.
- Registering your reactions like thumbs up & clap to literally every chat message in slack/teams/discord channels at work.
- Praise excessively on meetings like retrospectives, etc.
- Replying ‘thank you’ to every individual person who wished you or congratulated you for some occasion, especially in WhatsApp groups.

Have you ever introspected why you are ‘too nice’ to people instead of just being ‘nice’ to people?

Yes. 
 It's a behavior that was very encouraged when I was a junior - managers and founders loved that somebody was nice, would follow their word, and deliver 
  
 As I have grown in the last couple of years within companies, it's becoming a curse. Getting work out of people requires you to sometimes break that habit. I've also been given feedback that I don't speak up when I'm supposed to. 
  
 Nice to the point where you're doing disservice to your work is not nice 
  
 In case anybody went through this, it would be really helpful to hear how you broke it

Just saw an ad for Grapevine on Reddit. Always thought of Grapevine as the Reddit for Indian working professionals. Isn't it ironic that they're advertising here? Makes you wonder if Reddit will start advertising on Grapevine next! 😆

Is it just me or people in general have a lot less patience and courtesy now ? 

The other day a young lad parked his bike right in the middle of parking lot entrance. I politely asked him to park to either side of the entrance and he acted as if I had asked for his kidneys. Rude in his response and offended for no reason.

Even in general I find the courtesy or politeness quotient go down over the last few years. There is more arrogance, irritation, anger and attitude.

Have you experienced the same ?

I've noticed a pattern where HRs from mediocre companies are extremely arrogant and ask unnecessary questions. Whether it is from their tone of voice, to asking ridiculous questions about a candidate's personal life and things that are already on the resume, why do they act so holier than thou? Now FAANG adjacent companies and their HRs/ first point of contacts are always empathetic and very clear in asking sensible, relevant questions. Why don't companies realise that their first point of contact is what affects their brand and hiring unqualified folks makes it worse. Have you ever noticed this? What do you think can be done to make this/ candidate experience better?

Why are HRs from mediocre companies so arrogant?

HRs in mid places are usually coming from really small / unknown companies and feel like they’ve made it hence the arrogance. Folks in big/decent companies usually have come from wonderful education bgs and workplaces and if not, have worked hard enough to reach where they are. That humbles you, I feel.

I found it be coming from a young fellow who was inspired by these words of wlb and best pay etc. But then there may be a mature (10+yr ex) chap who reverted to him to focus on learning. I was amazed by the confidence of the author of the post in reverting to that fellow while taking a shot at his pseudo name also ( which was quite funny actually).

Have noticed over the course of time, one of the clearest marks that somebody might be an asshole:

1) In front of seniors: Extremely nice, subservient, "How are you doing", "How was your weekend hehehe", They'll aggressively try to match lunch times, so on and so forth

2) When only juniors are around (absence of a senior): Clearly moody, won't talk properly, might even be aggressive in their asks, miss greeting them when crossing paths, avoid them during lunches, generally low energy around juniors 

We all know them, but it's an interesting way to gauge the people around you I feel. 
Anyone else noticed this/some version of this?
