With all the layoffs news, how do u cope when…

Over the past two decades I have seen lay offs manifesting in various ways but the recent trend of sudden layoffs and declining empathy is disturbing.

While the decline could have its own reasons one of the best ways to deal with such curve balls is being prepared. Have a multi-purpose toolkit. 

This could possibly be a break from a monotonous life and a welcome change to go after what matters.

How do you cope with the loss of routine after being laid off?

Was just reading The Ken’s article they posted today around what went behind Bain’s recent layoffs - made me think a lot. More so because I rejected my offer from Bain in college to go join a startup.

Bain is a titan in the consulting world, what made it stumble so hard in India? By now, all of us know Bain let go 15-20% of its workforce, a shocking move that reveals deep problems.

What went wrong?
1/ Putting all eggs in one basket: Bain's excessive dependence on Tiger Global (60-70% of PE consulting revenue) proved catastrophic when Tiger faltered. When Tiger faltered, Bain was left scrambling.
2/ Overconfidence led to overhiring: The 2022 hiring spree, nearly doubling B-school intake, reveals a dangerous disconnect between market realities and internal optimism. Now, with less work, those hires became a burden.
3/ Reputation at Risk: Layoffs may solve immediate financial woes, but the long-term damage to Bain's employer brand could prove costly in an industry that thrives on top talent.
4/ Others learn from Bain's mistakes: While Bain stumbled, rival BCG played it safer and is now in a stronger position.
5/ Growth isn't everything: Bain's fall shows that in consulting, steady relationships and smart hiring matter more than just getting bigger.

I recently got laid off from my Company (they are unfortunately shutting down all major operations apart from sales)

I am kinda scared with all the layoffs going around since last 2 years now. Makes me feel extremely pukish at night and I smoke cigarettes late night to numb myself with a glass of whiskey. Sometimes the panic attack induces vomiting.

My girlfriend is getting a little worried about me. She mentions that she finds me distant especially during intimate moments. What should I do?

Hello Grapevine fam, 

I want to share my story and get everyone's suggestions on how to proceed. 

I have been working with this startup for more than two years. Recently, my manager and HR head called me for a meeting and said I wasn't living up to their expectations and they wanted me to resign. In the same discussion they said, the company would be paying 2 months salary as severance pay and my LWD would be in June since the notice period here is 2 months and this would help me in my job hunt.

So having faith in this company, I resigned. Right after that my manager and the HR head is not legally acknowledging the two months of my salary as severance pay. And the very same day, they sent me the experience letter which had the same day as my last working day, despite them mentioning my LWD would be in June. 

How do I proceed now? I have given my best to the company in the last two years. But things turned out this way, very dejected and disappointed with the startup.

I got laid off in Jan. Took 4 months to land a job finally and joined a new company in May.
This new company seems to be silently laying off people now in the name of cost cutting and likely be trying to raise next round of funding although they previously raised previous round in Aug-2022.
Although right now it's more of they need me (my role, I'm the only person of this role) more than I need them, I'm 70% confident that I might not be impacted, but the 30% chance is keeping me sleepless. What do I do? Pretty traumatized from the first layoff.

Just spoke to of my friend who works at India’s largest MSME startup where they feel negativity more now than before doing lay offs. 

Is this the case with other startups who did layoff?

I used to work in a start up in Bangalore, they overhired in 2022 and overpaid the freshers, more than the experienced engineers were getting paid.
To fix this put 30% of workforce on pip, laid off 20% I was one of them. 2 months later, they did open layoffs, did it again in 2 months, and one of my friends there heard the founders cracking a laugh that even the investors wouldn't have expected us to do this so fast.

I joined another company, they lost the client I was hired for, and few more clients, I was told they will have to do layoffs and my name is in the list. So they asked me to resign and I refused by saying we'll consider a last working day, if I get an offer I'll resign otherwise anyway I'll have to be laid off and they agreed. This happened one month after I had joined this company ( also a startup ).


So, being laid off once was already a big enough punch of reality, with an education loan on my head.
I joined another company and got laid off again. Tough shit.


I ended up getting an offer before my lwd.
I am not from any IIT, I am not an exceptional engineer. I am very bad interviews, my resume usually doesn't get shortlisted.

Sheer volume of effort I put made the impact on me getting a job.
Right now I am the best job of my career, with a better management.


Trying to say, it's a tough time. But you'll get through it.

I am an entry level analyst in at Deloitte. Just wondering if these are some signs of a practice not doing great + potential layoffs in a few months/year.

1. Utilization: ~45% last quarter. They originally said that it was a slow start to the year with low CapEx by companies but we still don't look good this quarter now.

There was a small call last night between a few people in this project level meeting and the senior management straight up said "Their is no demand and people are still on bench. We need to reallocate some headcount"

2. Headcount growth - Last 1.5 years ago, every month we had 10-15 people join our practice, This has literally gone down to 1-2 hires to replace people who have left.

3. Resignations: 6-7 people are leaving every month in my practice, which is quite harsh. Someone told me that everyone they used to work with when they joined have already left.

4. AI-pocalypse - I feel most companies think that they can now do AI inhouse and niche projects but higher costs because of MS/PhD folks working on it is something they dont want to go for anymore.

If a layoff is incoming, what would be the best ways to prep?

I see two options:
1. Getting on a boring sad project but long term.
2. Do nothing: I am literally the cheapest resource in the company so they would ideally layoff senior folks first, right??

For Software engineers with 7/8 years of experience or access to relevant data points, can someone tell me the following:

Pay structure and salary increment in 2016-2019 cycle vs 2019-2023 cycle 

I have a feeling that a lot of SEs here have an inherent sense of entitlement, that they deserve a salary X / WFH / other covid perks... which is primarily pegged to the madness of 2020-22, where they were getting abnormal salary increments. My hypothesis is that they are still better off in 2019-23 cycle vs 2016-19 cycle.
