There'd be employees who deserve more but due to higher management restrictions, they're unable to get the deserving number. How do you prepare in such situations?

Had my appraisal meeting with the manager today and the feedback I received don't put me in a good light. The manager wants me to be more proactive and ask for more work. In the last 2 years more than half of my team has quit for whatever reasons and even with the increased workload that I completed on time, I have received a rating of "partially achieved". What's even weirder is that the rating was given before the appraisal meeting even started. The manager had made up their mind. 

I see the market and feel grateful for a relatively safe job and a relatively fine package but this event makes me feel under-appreciated at work. My team lead still treat me like a fresher even though I have 2+ yoe and assigns high priority tickets to other team members. Given the fewer complex tasks in my bucket, the manager feels I'm not up to the task which is far from truth. 

I want to make a switch and move on to better opportunities before long but I am worried whether this merit report will sour my chances when the HR asks for them during interviews / onboarding.

Have you had similar experiences? What did you do? 

Also, am I wrong in being worried about the appraisal report affecting my chances at new companies?

The job market has not been good for the last 12-15 months, but organisations around are offering good severance to their employees and aiding them for their next steps. But UC conducts "performance reviews" twice a year, which is basically a platform for managers to wage a personal vendetta against the "low performers"(read: people who don't suck up to them). And hence, they strategically 'ask people to leave', in return of making sure that terms like 'fired', 'laid off' would not be associated with them. So, people put in their papers, and serve the one month notice without working, and get that salary as their 'severance'. 

Leadership team goes on to boast the fact that there hasn't been any layoffs in the company. Well, fair, because one needs to own the fact that they've laid people off, and funnily enough one of the UC values is 'ownership', and managers do OWN the indifference to the sudden absence of a certain team member from meetings. 

Apparently, people perform fine till the time these half yearly reviews are conducted, because there isn't any concern about their performances in the regular one-on-ones with the managers, but cometh the review, cometh the concerns with performance. Managers nit pick over employees not responding within 15 minutes to their messages. Also, there isn't a 360° view of performance, so your peers, who work much closer to you don't have a say in your performance.

UC brags a 'meritocratic' culture, and rightly so, where ones merit is their ability to show their work as 10x of what it actually is, appearing to be busy with a completely packed calendar, and always saying yes to whatever manager says, even if it means bending over backwards for them.

Hi All, 
I joined Deloitte in Nov,2023. During my joining i negotiated with the HR regarding the increment of my base pay as it was too less. HR gave me two options, 1. Either take a joining bonus of 50k with the same package, 2. Or be eligible for the next appraisal cycle i.e. april 2024. 

I wondered if my efforts in the project will be recognised or not by the end of april. So i choose to take the joining bonus with the same package. 

The HR has left the firm and i am not sure whom to ask and approach regarding the appraisal query. Will i still be ineligible for an appraisal of even 5-10% this year?

How to deal with situations where you have given your best and contributed a lot to the project/Organisation (which is tangible) but the efforts don't get reflected in your performance appraisals and promotions due to office politics? 
You don't get promoted because the boss's favourite needs to be promoted despite sub-par performance.
Shifting the job isn't an option for a few years considering responsibilities, lack of good paying jobs in finance and the Organisation is really good.

How do you deal with bad performance reviews?

The company did around 10-15% silent layoffs in the last cycle by putting people in PIP. 
My Manager told me that he has pressure on him to put at least 1 or 2 people in PIP, make them leave the company and reduce costs.

Later, the company did as low an appraisal as 2%.

Senior folks are leaving specifically Frontend Developers.

Salaries of a lot of SDE-2 are below 30 LPA.

They have started new positions called Product Developers which will do the same work as SDEs but with a lesser package. PD-1 salary is around 10-12 lakhs and of Lead PD is 20-22 lakhs.

The company is putting itself in a position where it wants people to leave on their own.

There are almost zero perks in the company. 
The team outing budget is a joke which is 2k INR per person per year. That is 500 rupees per person per quarter. 

Also making office mandatory from November.

Good thing. Anyways their frontend devs and PMs were doing everything on Twitter except tech.

It's been a year I'm working with one company that has good name. But everymonth I have 40% of the time where I work more than 11+hrs (with food and all activities I work 16 hrs sometimes)

How do You guys balance this?

I tried balancing this but my manager and lead are telling that I'm not taking taking ownership these days. Earlier when I used to work more I delivered on time and took lot of ownership. But when I work less and do just my work or logout after 10 hrs it's affecting this.

I work for a early stage startup (A) right now since about 1.5yrs at base 18lpa (no appraisal since my tenure even though I was told they have a bi-annual cycle, but It never happened)

I have another company (B), willing to offer base 28lpa (but will require relocation). 

I still haven't interviewed at B, and was wondering if i can should talk to A asking for an appraisal? I'm also not sure if i should mention about B at all. 

How much i understand A will be like let us launch something and then we can talk about appraisals, but this has been going on since a year now and we tend to change the architecture or the methodology everytime we almost have something ready to ship. 


That being said still I'd rather stay at A than relocate for B at the moment. 

How should I go about this, any suggestions? TIA

How should I ask for a raise?

My manager goes into meeting without me a lot of times. Later he comes and explains me what needs to be done. It makes me feel like his assistant. If this continues, how will I make a presence of my own in front of the stakeholders? Ultimately I need good reviews from them and not just from my manager for a good appraisal.

I know I shouldn't get bothered about this but it's easier to say than adopt that thinking.

Leadership is clueless and one of the most toxic workplaces where people are bullied and no boundaries are considered 
.Just a week before the appraisal cycle, the let go of 100+ folks both billed onsite and offsite without even informing anyone in the team which impacted the work and morale of existing people. When asked about this to the management, all they cared about was the reviews on the ambition box and Glassdoor being low. They asked employees to give good reviews and when it was not working they used the marketing team to give good reviews, you can check the reviews yourself to verify this. The next big thing is , keeping org wide evaluations from manager level also and calling it some development program and mandating the employees to take it along with delivery work. So we can expect more rounds to happen going forward. What is more sad is the blackmailing and forcing employees to take down reviews and  employees who are planning to goo
