Hi, I’ve been in sales for last 5+ yrs working across top companies in media, SaaS, and now recently MarTech. I’ve mostly dealt with new age companies as my clientele which is good because I don’t want to deal with tough personas or rather too traditional ones. 

Tbh the last 5 yrs have just passed by where I didn’t take a moment to reflect what my actual skill set is and spent most of my career trying to fake it till I make it. I cannot go on like this forever and I think I should switch to another role before its too late. 

People who have switched from sales to another role, I would love to hear your journey, what steps you took, how did you identify your next switch, how do you feel about your decision now?

In 2017, after graduating, I joined a big IT corporate as an Associate Consultant (Engineer). My start date was delayed by six months, and four months in, I was benched with half my already very low pay.

Money was tight with rent and other expenses. My family expected me to start investing in jewellery and buying land.

I was new to Bangalore and wanted more money to visit bars and expensive restaurants every weekend. Wanted to buy a bike with good gear. Along the dream to have a girl riding behind me. Sab Aukat ke bahar.

As one does, I started looking out into startups. The problem - 0 relevant work ex.

So here it goes,
I had interned at a startup in college and knew what their documents looked like. Filled the 6 empty months in my CV with a job as a “SDE-I Android” working with the founder directly.
I spiced up my CV with claims of 2x load time, reducing costs, international team collaboration, and an award.
Some college awards to boot too!

I made a detailed fake job story, read interview books, solved questions and watched salary negotiation videos. Eventually, I got into a Series A startup with only having to make 1 fake certificate.
They never checked with my previous employers, and now I earn eight times what I would have.

The guilt and imposter syndrome haunted me until I started performing well. I still feel guilty, like last Holi when my family praised my achievements.

Just excused myself and went for a smoke and a ride out. The bike is here and it is a custom painted beauty.

Guilty thoughts still go by occasionally but I am becoming more and more comfortably numb to it every passing year.

I have since stopped outright lying and just partake in the standard resume inflation.

Had to let this out.

I ventured into data engineering. 
I dove into SQL, Python, Snowflake, and AWS, 
completing two projects that showcase my skills. 

With 2 years of IT experience, I’m now ready to make the shift to a data engineering role. I have fabricated a resume such that I have worked as a DE in my current organisation.

I am wondering what the salary hike I can expect. 
Considering my current package is 4.5L. 
And how's the job market right now for DE roles.

When I am talking to people (irrespective of gender), my instant communication continuer to share an example of same thing they talked about.

Example 
'I went to Mumbai'
'Oh I remember when I went to Mumbai'

'I love mountains'
'Oh I hate mountains, I like beaches better' (nobody even asked for my opinion)

If not this then - Hmmm, yea, okay, Cool, Great, That's nice, sweet, 😊, 🙌, ✌️
And the conversation dies.

There should a third way. What's that?

How do you hold a conversation (text or in person)?

Was just discussing with my SO, about how somethings during our school days were really popular but there was no Internet to purport virality.

Even FLAMES or Truth/Dare. Like there has to be a genesis of these trends right?

I can already imagine some kid coming up with ideas like this and they caught on so hard, that word of mouth travelled far and wide.

Especially, something like Truth/Dare or Superman S, most kids in India know about it and it is a common cultural thing across the globe as well.

What do you think? Does anything else come in mind?

While it is a matter of personal preference, it is worth considering whether publicizing and structuring the discussion of a parent's death for content consumption is the most appropriate way to grieve. What’s something you did as a teen that still makes you cringe?

This is an after thought from what happened at Mojocare and Gomechanic. 

I too have been at a startup that was upto similar stuff. Was really large at one point, until everyone figured something was off. 

For me, the first year or so I never got a hint of things. But over time, as I became closer and more trusted by the founders, things became quite clear. Creation of invoices for the sake of it, recording transactions that were anyway happening in the offline world, as transactions on the platform. Basically buying invoices by giving back businesses some of the VC capital as incentives. It was all messed up.

I always thought of doing something once I figured it out, but ended up not doing it. My only action was to find new roles, and leave as soon as I could. 
I remember discussing with friends - should I reach out to journalists? The answer we came to was that it's too risky, even if done anonymously. AND, that people we know would lose their jobs if the reality came out.

Eventually, it did come out. More people lost their jobs, because in that 1 year they ended up growing more and hiring more. Maybe if I'd been a whistleblower earlier, a lot of money could have been saved, so many jobs would not be lost.

To me, it’s all about access. 
Access to authentic ideas.

The best search result you get on Google is high SEO but low authenticity. On LinkedIn, there are so many people but everyone is shilling a course or 1:1 resume reviews. 

Mostly it has become a place which started as vanity signalling

( I have started a new role…, I have been accepted at …, I have received offers from F, A, N and G and I’m joining G.)  

And now people pushing mindless content with “Agree?” or “Comment Interested”.

Somehow, everyone is truly inauthentic to please a wider audience and say the exact same generic gyaan to maximise engagement.

For now, Grapevine is where people are genuinely themselves and I get to hear interesting things that you get to hear near the coffee machine.

Kinda feels like we’re all a big community where we all contribute and learn new things about the professional landscape around us.

Write about a time you made someone feel very nice. Hopefully it can be a collection of ideas that others can take forward. If somehow a few people do something nice as a result, that would be powerful.

To start with an example: Bought a laptop for my grandfather because he wanted to continue working post 60. Helped him learn Excel, Gmail, Chrome browsing over many days. He really picked it up, and works as a consultant for new companies in the industry he worked all his life.

You know its the small things that you do everyday that matter - giving your staff an off when they ask and not cutting their pay, feeding stray animals, quietly paying the bill when you know the other person is struggling financially, not haggling with street vendors for 100rs (when you’re paying 800rs to eat popcorn in PVR), changing the topic of conversation when you realise someone is feeling uncomfortable yet cannot say in front of others… we all need high empathy skills 🙏🏻

In my org people have been creating that vibe where they are very sophisticated about their actions, the way they speak etc, they behave like we are working in a US based startup where they are using western lingo and all together a different way to communicate. I have worked in other startups in other cities but didn’t find this type of culture. Is this common or am I missing something?

What are your thoughts?

Are bangalore people actually very sophisticated or they are just faking it?

A simple explanation is that people live in their little bubble. 
 That bubble explodes when the auto/cab driver tells them to go f themselves

Failed to spend enough time with my parents. Life moves really fast. If you're around your parents take care of them, spend time with them and if you're away then make sure you visit them often ☮️

Just had a call with a US Based client. I found myself speaking in a very pretentious accent that I do not use ever if I am talking to someone in India.

Does this happen to you as well? 

Idk if it's a bad or a good thing, though. I never tried to emulate or pretend to be somebody I'm not specially through my accent. I don't know what happened today. I suppose I was intimidated? Or maybe I'm just overthinking lol

You won't believe what happened today at the office.

I was chilling at my desk and minding my own business. That is when this boomer comes out of nowhere and tells me to clean the plates in the pantry. I was like, huh???

I did not join for this.

I said, "Yeh mera kaam nahi hai" but he just smiled and said that, "Yaha everyone contributes to everything."
What part to contribute to? Since when did "Software Engineer" include "Dishwasher" in the job description?

I was so angry, but I didn't want to make a scene in front of everyone. So, I just rolled up my sleeves and picked up a plate. I could feel my blood boiling. That guy had the audacity to say, "Make sure you clean it properly" 

"Sahi mei? I have a degree in Computer Science, not some Hotel Management coolie."
Before I started, he said that he was just kidding and it was just a joke.

Has anyone else had to deal with this kind of nonsense at their company?

 But “Hotel management coolie” is really no way to talk about anyone
