Hi, I’ve been in sales for last 5+ yrs working across top companies in media, SaaS, and now recently MarTech. I’ve mostly dealt with new age companies as my clientele which is good because I don’t want to deal with tough personas or rather too traditional ones. 

Tbh the last 5 yrs have just passed by where I didn’t take a moment to reflect what my actual skill set is and spent most of my career trying to fake it till I make it. I cannot go on like this forever and I think I should switch to another role before its too late.

This fake IT experience has been popping up these days. Is it true, like how it can't be tracked in verification?

Context: 

I was reading a post where the OP mentioned verifying fake internships, but how is that even possible? Wouldn't they verify with the companies? I can understand faking a PoR, but even that should be difficult. Faking any kind of internship should be nearly impossible. It might be possible to craft a convincing story, but if they conduct a background check, it will be exposed, regardless of how believable the story is.

In 2017, after graduating, I joined a big IT corporate as an Associate Consultant (Engineer). My start date was delayed by six months, and four months in, I was benched with half my already very low pay.

Money was tight with rent and other expenses. My family expected me to start investing in jewellery and buying land.

I was new to Bangalore and wanted more money to visit bars and expensive restaurants every weekend. Wanted to buy a bike with good gear. Along the dream to have a girl riding behind me. Sab Aukat ke bahar.

As one does, I started looking out into startups. The problem - 0 relevant work ex.

So here it goes,
I had interned at a startup in college and knew what their documents looked like. Filled the 6 empty months in my CV with a job as a “SDE-I Android” working with the founder directly.
I spiced up my CV with claims of 2x load time, reducing costs, international team collaboration, and an award.
Some college awards to boot too!

I made a detailed fake job story, read interview books, solved questions and watched salary negotiation videos. Eventually, I got into a Series A startup with only having to make 1 fake certificate.
They never checked with my previous employers, and now I earn eight times what I would have.

The guilt and imposter syndrome haunted me until I started performing well. I still feel guilty, like last Holi when my family praised my achievements.

Just excused myself and went for a smoke and a ride out. The bike is here and it is a custom painted beauty.

Guilty thoughts still go by occasionally but I am becoming more and more comfortably numb to it every passing year.

I have since stopped outright lying and just partake in the standard resume inflation.

Had to let this out.

Currently I'm just wondering why interviews feels so fake especially the behavioural ones, which I actually struggle with. 

I think it's just a game where candidates say what the interviewer wants to hear instead of trying to know the real character of the candidate. Compared to coffee chats, I think you can actually know about a person more than when you actually do interviews. Any thoughts here?

[TL;DR former National quizzing champ dropped out of B. Tech in 2020 during peak of addiction and depression . Got over it and sober in Jan'23, resumed college and completed my B. Tech in Feb'24. Picked up coding again and feel ready for a job now Should I be honest or lie about the gap? Been ghosted my few recruiters whom I was honest with.]

JS developer here. I used to be a decent student, public speaker and one of the best quizzers in the college scene (former National Champ). But I never addressed some traumatic events that took place in my life before I turned 16. My depression took refuge in substance abuse and I abandoned all studies/career prospects during the pandemic. Eventually after 7 years of using, I got clean/sober in Jan'23 and resumed my studies. I earned my degree but on paper it took me 8 years to complete a 4 year B. Tech (2016-24).

Reasonably I get asked about the gap in my academics by hr/recruiters whom I push my CV to. I've been dead honest to them about my struggles with mental health and addiction in the past. And I've been getting ghosted. (It could be because of skill reasons on my part but I'm not even getting a feedback).

Should I not tell recruiters the truth about the gap? Should I leave the addiction bit out? How should I word it? I've never held a real coding job before but been slogging for the last 6 months to get better each day (my github and projects will reflect that). Please help me out with all your valuable suggestions. If you're a tech recruiter let me know how you would perceive my case.

You don't have to. They are not your friends and you don't know how someone might take it as.  
 You have been brave enough to come out of it but unfortunately not everyone will see it.

Hello everyone,

 I'm 2020 graduate. Due to my low academic scores (below the eligibility criteria), I have been unable to get responses from recruiters. I initially thought about preparing for government exams, but that did not go too well. In the meantime, I have been doing freelance work while studying. However, I cannot count that as formal experience. 

Currently, I am applying for jobs - my portfolio is ready and I am trying to make some open source contributions. However, I have two major challenges in getting recruiter calls:

1. My 10th class academic score is low. 

2. There is a 3 year career gap after graduation.

I am unsure how to tackle these situations. Could you please suggest approaches to land a job given these circumstances?

So there was one company I was being interviewed at for position of product role. They told me to make a mobile app, not an actual one just on paper but it was a lengthy assignment and took me 5 days to complete it. (Day and night with minimal sleep)
Now in the deep assignment discussion round the interviewer asked me why I built an app. 
In my head the answer was you guys only told me to build it😂😂 but I managed to fake something for sophisticated.

My resume isn't exactly the most honest document out there - I'd say about 60-70% of it is made up of lies or exaggerations. I added a couple of years of experience to get a better salary when I started out, and it worked! Now I'm getting paid like I've got 4.5 years of experience when I'm actually only a 2-year.

I'm doing fine in my current job and my skills are up to par, but I can't help but wonder if I'm setting myself up for trouble down the line. I'm thinking about looking for a job in Europe or the US eventually. I doubt they'll do a background check since I'm from a certain country, but I'm still concerned.

Any advice would be appreciated!
