I work for about 8 hours a day.  
  
 It's definitely tiring when you focus for 8 hours continuously, but my organization practices pair programming. This way when I feel tired I can swap with my partner and vice versa. Makes the job much easier!

Do you have colleagues in your organisation( big brand) who are below average & you still think how are they still working?
I mean people doing ctrlx + ctrlv, basic excel but earning in lakhs?

Yesterday I started work around 11.30 and spent about 2-3 hours in the morning & afternoon doing code reviews , tech discussions, meetings etc. and then spent most of the day chilling with my parents. (WFH)

I felt a bit guilty about working so less (and there was some work to do) so I put in a 3 hour focused time to write some code/implement some requirements. 

Total of about 5-6 hours of actual time spent actually working. This has been about the average for me for a year now; this is how a typical work day usually looks like. At home I usually spend maybe 6-8 hours in front of the laptop at my desk out of which 5-6 hours would be actual time spent working. (It’s a LOT less at office, that’s a different story altogether)

Is this too less or is this the norm for software engineers today? What does the number look like for you, how many hours do you spend in front of your laptop & how many hours do you actually work every day?

I see a lot of posts about WLB, I want to know what do you consider as a decent WLB. I will go first.

1. Leave early if the work for that day is done
2. No pings and calls post work hours, there are always exceptions and thats okay, should not become a norm
3. Respecting when someone is in vacation and not disturbing them.
4. Not rejecting leaves 

I will add more in comments If more comes to my mind.

As I'm entering a new stage of life, I'm starting to reevaluate my career priorities. In my 20s, I was all about climbing the ladder and chasing prestige. Now, I'm more focused on finding work that aligns with my values and allows for a balanced lifestyle. 

Have any of you gone through a similar shift? How did it change your career trajectory? And how do you define success for yourself now versus when you first started out?

Redefining success: How have your career priorities shifted as you've grown older?

Man, this hits home. I used to be all about the fancy title and corner office. Pulled 80-hour weeks, missed family events, the whole rat race thing.

Then my dad got sick last year. Spent a lot of time in hospitals, thinking about what really matters. Realized I couldn't remember the last time I took a real vacation or had dinner with my kids without checking emails.

Ended up taking a step back at work. Less pay, but more flexibility. You know what? I don't miss the stress. Sure, the ego took a hit at first, but I'm actually enjoying work now. Plus, I'm finally learning my kids' friends' names!

Success for me now? It's about having time for the people I love and work that doesn't make me dread Mondays. Still figuring it out, but dekhte hain baaki :)

He's a founder and possibly gets salary and stock dividends in millions of dollars every month. He can most certainly work 80hrs a month.  
  
 Founders usually work a lot, hence the pay. There's nothing new about it.

I've had the fortune of having worked in 3 countries so far. India is by far the most exciting place to be in 2024.
But there's something about our work ethic that just concerns me. In both white and blue collar.

In most other countries, I've observed people strictly sticking to the 9 to 5, working diligently in those hours - not wasting too much time on chai sutta breaks, instagram browsing, gupshup etc.

They work for 8 hours, then leave. And think about work directly the next day.

In India, most of us spend more hours - but very obviously very few of those hours are productive. In fact, I lately feel that too many people around me are doing even 2-3 hours of work on a good day.

We end up just staying around, passing time, and then go back home. When we could have achieved so much more.

Work ethic has fallen. Work hours have gone up.

We need to be more mindful of our actions, we need to work well at work, and then do well at home.

I think it's a function of being over populated. There are 1.5-2 people doing what 1 person should be doing, hence this effect.

Needs to be fixed, it's the sign of a major problem in the workforce. Thoughts?

Disguised unemployment in India - It's all around us :/

We don't end up staying long hours because we need to. But because we have to, so that the manager doesn't feel like we leave the office by "half day".  
  Also, they have a leverage that they can shut their laptops at 5 and nobody will reach out to them. But here in India, managers do reach out for escalations, or make us attend lat evening calls because it's afternoon in Europe or morning in NA. The people sitting in Europe or NA are not made to wake up early or attend night calls to accommodate us during our actual 9-5.  
  People also chit chat etc. bcz they know for sure that they have to sit for long hours..so they need to take small breaks in the day. No one has the capacity to work 10-11 hrs without any breaks.  
  Here it would never be possible to have such a strict 9-5.

So I was working wfh since past year and recently shifted to a project after a promotion, it’s a nice project and something I was looking forward to work with, but now my reporting manager says that you have to clock atleast 8 hours daily at this tracking software ( Nippon Buddy ). 
And I’ve to report to office 12 days a month, that’s okay but this 8 hours capture time is kinda nuts. 
Do you guys have these kinda policy as well or is it just at service based companies ?

So I am working at a startup for around a year now. Everyday I see, it feels, what am I really doing? Where is the life headed? 
    Doing bare minimum or doing your tasks and fucking off isn't enough. It's expected that we outgrow constantly, as if it's this work that we can always think about and nothing else. At the end, am wondering if it's still worth it?
    1 day it feels that let's just quit it! Next day I feel, okay, I do want the money. 

I ain't looking for suggestions here, just wanted to see if anyone else felt this way

Been there, but money is very important especially for a middle class family, for most of us we are earning 5x more than our parents at least and have huge expectations from families to provide them with good life

I work in remote mode full time, occasionally visit the office, once in 3 months. My office is located in a different city from where I live in.

The work I do is challenging and interesting, but I manage to complete my tasks by working for max 4-5 hours a day. Remaining time of the day, I get distracted, not with household duties but by doing research on random stuff. I want start a company, but I have no idea where to start. I consume a lot of information, yet most of the time I spend goes unproductive. By nature, I am very unorganized. 

Most of my friends are busy in their own world and I don’t want to disturb them seeking advice.

Any idea how I can get over this habit to make productive use of my time, while WFH?

I have seen so many posts, on Grapevine alone, of how people are being harrassed and traumatized in their companies. And honestly, reading all those posts and comments scare the hell out of me because I haven't been subjected to or witnessed anything like this.

Let me share the experience I have had till now:

I have ~2 YOE, and Capgemini is my first company. I know the pay isn't great, but that's the only thing I don't like about the company. 

The people I have met or worked with in the entirety of my time here, they are supportive, kind, and considerate. Every single one of them, including the managers/directors. They don't expect you to work late hours or on weekends, unless there are critical escalations/important deadlines.

My manager gives out words of thanks and appreciation, even on the smallest of things (yes he talks strictly too, and usually I am at the wrong when this happens, nothing major though). I get all the support that I need. I don't have to worry about the work life balance.

I have never had a single issue with a teammate, and most of them are seniors whom I work with. No big egos, no attitude, nothing. They help out whenever I reach out to them.

And it is the same story on my client side as well. 

I have worked/interacted with both male and female leaders, and all I have ever seen among everyone is empathy, respect for everyone's work, and always ready to help nature.

I understand that this is all just my experience, but my reason for writing this post is to share a positive experience and that there are still good people around here.

Here is something I can tell you about bias. It is human nature to be very emotional and complain when things are bad and not talk about it too much when things are good.  
  
 Forums like Grapevine and Blind are filled with unhappy posts because of this reason. Most people complain when things are bad. Hardly anyone praises when things are good. For every bad post you see here, I am sure people are out there having a good time at work.  
  
 Treat this with a pinch of salt and live out your career, you only have one. Don’t be bogged down and settle because you are scared of the unknown.

I feel a lot of insecurity about what if I lost my job.
I work in Analytics & data science in a well known Indian Bank.
Overall WOE is 8 yrs with 6 yrs in Analytics

I would say after MBA i lost my way and hence behind my peers in career growth. This is mostly due to unsatisfactory work in the beginning leading to switches based on emotions and impulse, not patience.

Though my current job is stable and its been about 2.5 years in this role, it’s a bit stressful and honestly I don’t like the constant firefighting mode that we are in. I constantly put in 10-11 hrs on a daily basis with occasional work on weekends. This includes almost 3 hrs of meetings everyday, where a lot of redundant work requests come in and almost everytime they have to be delivered in next 1-2 days. Quality of work is not so great.

I tried applying but not getting decent calls. Only startups and Indian cos with high turnover reply to my applications. They too aren’t ready to discuss a decent hike.

I am really insecure about what will happen if I quit / laid off. I have gone through layoffs earlier in my career and believe me it’s a terrible experience, eats up all your savings. 

I tI tried a few sidegigs to build passive income source such as building a YouTube channel on travel, or a travel advisory app but couldn’t move much. App didn’t happen and YT channel didn’t get off after few months of hard work.


I currently am very demotivated and feel that i have not been able to grow in my career. Salary posts on grapevine add a lot more to my demotivation.

Current CTC is 27.

At my current company i usually am occupied for more than 8 hours and i cannot do something like "reading a Blog to enhance my skillset, watch interview prep videos, learn something new or explore another zone of development like a new stack or something". After my working hours i give time to my pet dog, family and a little bit to myself.
Is it the same for you or is my service based company sucking the blood out of me?
