I recently started my first real job. Why do people do so much unpaid overtime?

Just wondering if this is normal. I normally stay back like 30mins, maybe more in rare occasions. For example today I stayed back like 50 mins because my manager and I were working together on a problem. Then he tells me that I should go home and he will investigate the problem himself. It was quite late so I went home but then I saw his last teams message was at 8pm meaning he was working on that problem for hours after I left? I don't really understand this idea of doing this much unpaid overtime. Are they trying to get promoted? To look hardworking? In my previous (retail) jobs, everyone left as soon as their shift was over. What we were doing was semi important but it could wait till the next day. Also I don't think he does it out of the love of his job because what we were doing wasn't super exciting either.
