Nope. It might end up being a media consumption device. Go for it only if you want some ipad specific applications.

Assumimg you are an engineering student, if you are asking this question, it means you cannot afford it very easily(just an assumption). If that's the case, then I would recommend not to waste your money. An iPad won't make you productive or an ace student. Buy plain old notebooks and take notes. I'm an amateur painter too but wasting 40-70K for a hobby that I don't get much time to pursue doesn't make sense financially.
