So in my small start-up company people are dropped for poor performance without any warning. It almost comes as a total surprise! And many times the poor performance is because of factors outside the control of the concerned person.

So this week I found out that I was almost going to be fired. Our company wanted to follow the current trend and do some layoffs. It seems I was on that bottom 10% list. Luckily we got some new business last month and they have delayed any layoff plans for a few months now.

I joined Morgan Stanley India as a spring intern this January. I was supposed to work for 6 months and would have been converted to a full time employee post the internship. I worked my ass off and got outstanding feedback from my manager (VP) and their managers as well (ED). On the other hand I kept asking my manager about my progress and chances of conversion. He assured me that I was an extraordinary intern and he kept assigning me work other than my project. I also interacted with other people in the organisation and received great feedback from them (upto MD level). Now coming to last week, I had a chat with my manager about the same, he informed me that the organisation has gone into a hiring freeze just 2 weeks back and thus I won't be getting converted to a FTE. Also this info is not public yet and a lot of the other interns have no idea what the situation is here. The people in my team have offered to help me out with opportunities outside the firm but there's nothing they can do inside for me. The most they can do is give me LORs but nothing more. I am a recent graduate with 2 years of experience as an intern at multiple startups and MNCs. Can the folks here help me out. Also is there anything I can do at the firm?

I was working at a Start-up more than a year back. We were required to either raise funds or do something else, against what we wanted to do, to move forward. 

One day, the co founders got us on a call (<10 people team), and explained the situation to us. 

Either an acquisition or a round of funding was the only chance. We hadn't raised any round up until then. 

Unfortunately, we had to bid goodbye to something that we were passionately working on.

Lay-offs!

But, we got 2 months notice. And on top of that, we were encouraged to prepare for interviews throughout those 2 months (while giving minimal importance to work). 

I literally cried multiple times because of the thought of having to leave the amazing team. 

The founders helped us with all the support, and made use of their network to help us get through as well. We're still in touch with the team, and all of us are at relatively good positions now. 

(Although anonymous, just wanted to share this out there with all of you folks. And I try to 'help it forward' as much as possible)

Housing.com (REA India) ranked 3rd in the GPTW survey this year. They provide several awesome perks like, laying off without any notice, fucking their reviews just so that they could justify the lay offs, and threatening actions if anything came out on social media. 

10-15% of the whole tech team was laid off (mostly freshers) apparently on the basis of low performance.  It was all carried out by the higher management, not even the managers had any clue about the lay off happening. 

The performance rating was rigged by the higher management who had no interaction with the tech people. They had this awesome idea of getting reviewed by people who we had never interacted with. Managers were merely bystanders who had no say in the performance review whatsoever. 


PS: A note for the management -->
Housing.com would be an employee friendly company only if you guys would give two fucks about employees, instead of Caring so much about the GPTW ranking like conducting hands on sessions and literally forcing people to put in good rating.

The rigged performance rating and the secrecy is so true. I got to know about my colleague getting fired when I opened his slack which was deactivated. Upon calling, he said it was all done in 5 mins, Forceful resignation, No Severance and was asked to post nothing on social media.  
  
 From my team alone 2 people have been laid off both freshers.

I recently changed my job, 3-4 months back.
It was a hard time finding a good job profile with good offer, after almost a year of searching amd giving interviews i found my current job. Luckily, my interviews were very good and i was offered more than what i had asked.
After joining team, i realized that they are looking to prepare for some regulatory changes and my role was pivotal in that. I kind of got to work and contribute on my own and my manager and his boss liked me. I was getting set but then last week, company announced some changes in top leadership and my manager's boss got a new boss. Now this guy seems little tricky and i don't know what all changes he would bring. As of now he seems to be sure of expanding the team/work that i do (related to regulatory stuff).

Now, these changes has got me a bit nervous. And i am kind a bit afraid about my job and its future. This is causing me stress. Any ideas or thoughts that can help me navigate.

I got laid off today from a YC-backed startup (W23) citing a shift in product focus. Was part of the core team since Oct '21, initially as an intern then later converted to FTE in '22. Got a decent (30%+) increment this year. I was leading the mobile platform but currently, I'm on a notice period. CTO is supportive and helping me via their network.

- companies with a bad product are still struggling 
- companies with a good product are still growing
- rent in Bangalore, Mumbai is still sky high 
- salaries are still high, people are still asking for more 
- food is expensive as ever 
- stock prices of companies that fired people never really went up 

Someone make any sense or any of this?

Layoffs were a total failure at changing anything

Why: I know that with all the job layoffs happening, it's kinda stupid to quit but I just can't. After almost a decade in the startup scene I'm taking a break, probably for good. 

From AI to B2C to ed-tech and more I have worked with startups at every stage of growth and across sectors. Almost in every one of these w/o exception, I have experienced burnout, mindless pressure, and being underpaid because I'm not from an IIT or IIM. 

Context: I love technology, I have been a sci-fi nerd since school and I threw myself into the stories of startups changing the world. But because of family finances and the overall culture of startups I haven't taken a break in about 10 years and it's starting to show. 

I don't have savings to last me more than 3-4 months but at this rate I'll end up checking out of society. 

Unsolicited advice: 
1) Most startups and the VCs that back them know they're going to fail but don't internalise their failure as yours. 
2) Always, always take care of your mental + physical health. Doesn't matter if you're intern and you're expected to slog 12-15 hours in the name of learning. 
3) I missed moments with my ageing mom and dad, school friends and just time to read and relax because I was afraid of missing out on "networking" and "office night outs". Fuck all that, it is and it will always be family and frit first. 


Finally, Fuck all you hustle bro CEOs, they have done more to damage the mentor health of a generation more than any politician. I feel stupid and useless because you can't help posturing and creating panic in the name of disruption. Hope AI takes your jobs too.

I work at a small scale startup where I interact daily with the CTO whom I directly report.

Recently, he has been giving tighter deadlines for critical projects at work and is not willing to discuss anything related to the scope or timeline of the projects. He just expects me to finish everything in x number of days without asking for even the slightest estimate of the duration.

This has led to me missing due dates for projects which he later blames on me quoting poor performance during reviews. 

Has anyone encountered such problems before? How did you handle it?

Deadlines without discussion

I used to work in a start up in Bangalore, they overhired in 2022 and overpaid the freshers, more than the experienced engineers were getting paid.
To fix this put 30% of workforce on pip, laid off 20% I was one of them. 2 months later, they did open layoffs, did it again in 2 months, and one of my friends there heard the founders cracking a laugh that even the investors wouldn't have expected us to do this so fast.

I joined another company, they lost the client I was hired for, and few more clients, I was told they will have to do layoffs and my name is in the list. So they asked me to resign and I refused by saying we'll consider a last working day, if I get an offer I'll resign otherwise anyway I'll have to be laid off and they agreed. This happened one month after I had joined this company ( also a startup ).


So, being laid off once was already a big enough punch of reality, with an education loan on my head.
I joined another company and got laid off again. Tough shit.


I ended up getting an offer before my lwd.
I am not from any IIT, I am not an exceptional engineer. I am very bad interviews, my resume usually doesn't get shortlisted.

Sheer volume of effort I put made the impact on me getting a job.
Right now I am the best job of my career, with a better management.


Trying to say, it's a tough time. But you'll get through it.

Which company were you obsessed with joining, but never could?

For me it was McKinsey 
 It was the best job out of college, status wise. 
  
 Did well in college and made it to the final shortlist. Was obsessed with it, read books and all about The Firm. 
  
 Then the interviews happened, couldn’t convert. Was a downer.  
  
 But 5 years later, doesn’t matter much. I feel life taught me better things. And my fascination of consulting jobs has changed drastically since :p

Context: 10.5 YOE, Marketing lead. I've been looking for a switch since September last year. I'd seen signs of maybe my role or the company itself folding very early and knew 'twas time to bolt. But it's not that easy. Back then - 1 year in a startup meant hey not bad, people still spoke to you and considered your profile. These days, they treat you like Ebola if you've not had your ass stuck in the same place for 3-5 years. 

Anyway, so the majority of my time searching for jobs was the shitty Easy Apply or IIMJOBS premium account route. Suprise suprise. It doesn't work. But hey I was still employed and not nearly as motivated as someone who's unemployed. 

Cut to layoffs: Got laid off with my whole team and a huge chunk of other leaders. My first layoff, felt hilariously like the last day of school. To the org's credit they gave us 3 month severance, leave encashments and extra months for those who'd been there for 2 years+. In hindsight hearing the horror stories of 2k severance from Byju's. I'm grateful for the nice golden parachute I got. I'll be honest, it contributed heavily to my mental stability. I had time, I had leverage, I didn't have to run for the first shitty opportunity that came my way. 

The How I did it (why you struggled through the above stream of consciousness) 

- Wrote to 159 founders with one pagers to 35 of them with ideas on how i'd lead their marketing function. 5 replies. 3 interviews. 2 offers - didn't take em cuz they were super early stage or diff cities. This is immediately in month 1 so I've already started feeling icky about not getting great brands to have in my set. 
- Easy Applied to 768 (I ran a Gmail search, this is a real number) jobs. 99% no responses or you've been rejected. 
-Kept changing one letter on my Naukri.com profile, got me 6 calls, 3 interviews and 1 conversion

 - Add HRs and hiring managers on LinkedIn, send them free ideas and strategies. Its ok if they steal them it meant they were great. One of them will refer you, remember you or hire you. 
 - Have a CV and a summary (half a page) that gets people excited about wanting to read the CV. Only areas of expertise and bullet points for results  
 - Don't put the OpentoWork filter on your LinkedIn DP. Its radioactive. I know people actively avoid those profiles. But make sure to keep open to work beacon on for recruiters. It pushes you ahead  
 - Dont post low effort i need a job because im laid off, i dont have money, copy pasted by millions on Linkedin. If you're gonna publically ask for a job, make sure that post has enuff of your skillset screaming for a potential hirer to want to explore more. Else you'll get velle gadhe typing CFBR 
 - Dont be anal or choosy about interviewing, i literally gave 35-50 in 3 months that culminated in 4 offers. Each one taught me something, heck ive spoken to startups with 7 peeps in it  
 - The only one that can negotiate CTC is the one that can walk away. When the offer i wanted finally came, my fixed went down a tad, but variable increased. The role was worth it so i didnt bother negotiating. Places i wasnt excited about - oh i quoted 30% hikes and got it at one place :p

I've had the fortune of having worked in 3 countries so far. India is by far the most exciting place to be in 2024.
But there's something about our work ethic that just concerns me. In both white and blue collar.

In most other countries, I've observed people strictly sticking to the 9 to 5, working diligently in those hours - not wasting too much time on chai sutta breaks, instagram browsing, gupshup etc.

They work for 8 hours, then leave. And think about work directly the next day.

In India, most of us spend more hours - but very obviously very few of those hours are productive. In fact, I lately feel that too many people around me are doing even 2-3 hours of work on a good day.

We end up just staying around, passing time, and then go back home. When we could have achieved so much more.

Work ethic has fallen. Work hours have gone up.

We need to be more mindful of our actions, we need to work well at work, and then do well at home.

I think it's a function of being over populated. There are 1.5-2 people doing what 1 person should be doing, hence this effect.

Needs to be fixed, it's the sign of a major problem in the workforce. Thoughts?

Disguised unemployment in India - It's all around us :/

We don't end up staying long hours because we need to. But because we have to, so that the manager doesn't feel like we leave the office by "half day".  
  Also, they have a leverage that they can shut their laptops at 5 and nobody will reach out to them. But here in India, managers do reach out for escalations, or make us attend lat evening calls because it's afternoon in Europe or morning in NA. The people sitting in Europe or NA are not made to wake up early or attend night calls to accommodate us during our actual 9-5.  
  People also chit chat etc. bcz they know for sure that they have to sit for long hours..so they need to take small breaks in the day. No one has the capacity to work 10-11 hrs without any breaks.  
  Here it would never be possible to have such a strict 9-5.

I’ve had a bad one that was done in 30 mins with a meagre severance and assets/accesses removed in 10 mins with a legal binding about a non social media disclosure 

Not mentioning which company for obvious reasons.
