@salt how are you thinking about this? Too much negativity around this role itself, your experienced take can give multiple PMs direction on how to approach this

Product Manager

Maven seeing so many PM courses shows that every leader is scrambling. I have seen many PM leader doing consulting or teaching or been away from industry... 
  
 This role will become more niche..

It's actually true. I was earlier in finance role so I think from an roi point of view. A lot of PMing has been glorified in past few years. Even the work of IT dept has been renamed as PM. Simply creating Jira, arranging meetings btwn ppl is stupid work, and bound to be extinct at some point. Most PMs have neither dev, design, business knowledge. Somewhere a person has to bring hard skills. I think that's why Airbnb got done with the role. Some are merging into Dev, design or Marketing dept.

What does the future hold? Should PMs start doing role switch? How is the grapevine PM community thinking about this?

Query- what do PMs on grapevine think about product management

Tier 1 MBA, 5 years of consulting plus corp strategy experience, 2 years data science exp pre MBA. Current ctc around 45.

Speaking to friends etc in the PM roles, I've developed an interest in the role. And would like to give it a fair shot. Just can't seem to figure out how. Any pointers would be really helpful.

Those of you who managed to break into a PM role after upto 5 years of non-PM work ex, how did you go about it?

With talks of PMs not being required last year, to crazy layoffs scene and PM hiring being the indicator of industry hiring scene, how do you folks deal with the anxiety? With PM hiring being skewed towards supply side, do you think about contingency plans in case you are fired?
Too much anxiety being a PM with 5 years experience and salary being the only income source.

PMs, how do you make yourself layoff proof?

So with advancement in technology since decade and then the COVID wave , many startups were having money flowing into them from VCs and there was a boost in Indian startup ecosystem, many startups achieved the status of unicorn too , i am not saying product managers were not existing before , ofcourse they were there buliding some amazing products for the users out there, but do you think that the extra cash that was coming into the system created so many product management roles as a generalist and gave rise to popularity of product management and now we can see every second person wants to be a PM

Did this give rise to so many PM roles?

Almost every other post about PM function is as eye opening as this. What do you guys think?

Hey folks. 
I am a PM with 1 YOE. 

I make a lot of unforced errors and have been in bad situations because of poor communication too. Although, I try my best to communicate everything and anything. The founder just hear me speak and not to hear specifically. 

I am gradually feeling, that maybe I am not good enough to survive in this role. 

On the other hand, I am pretty much interested in finance. Am above average in hard skills named as Financial Modelling, Financial Statement Analysis, Deal Structuring and Valuation Techniques. I read pre IPO papers to understand more about industries and sectors. Do financial modelling for the same companies to check if I am on the right track or not. 

How can I switch to a finance role maybe?  Or what other fields should I explore to get out of this. I have graduation in BTech.

[THREAD] Thinking to Switch from PM role

Got laid off from my first product management job. Was the company’s first APM hire and built 70% of their client facing features from 0 to 1.

As an early PM with 2 years of product experience (3+ if you throw in analytics roles I’ve done before), what will be a good fit role for me? 

I’ve narrowed them down to 3 
1. PMM
2.PM-1
3. Founders office roles 

Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of going into each role after a long APM stint (slightly less than 2 years, was their walking GPT for every tec-product-business thing they did, also was informally managing 3-4 people)

Laid off as a generalist PM after managing 0-1 for an early stage startup

Worked for a not particularly prestigious company as a developer for a few years before doing an MBA and moving into product management. Tier 1 institutes all the way through. I've been a product manager for 3 years now, in some pretty reputed companies.

At this point, I feel like the product management role is just not for me - I do not get job satisfaction out of it. The work is not particularly interesting or challenging, and talking to people all day feels like a chore. Its no fun to be creating random reports for leadership based on wherever the winds of the day blow. Plus tbh, I could be making far more money if I had remained a developer. Just cannot see myself doing this kind of work 10 years down the line.

Thinking of applying for some dev roles - it'll take some practice, but I could probably crack senior developer interviews. 

What does the community think? Is there stigma for people who ditch product roles for development roles? Are there people who even do this? Am I being realistic about this?
