Focus on real work, even when you’ve free time spend it on health, friends and family. 

P.S. - This might sound preachy but I wanted to highlight when everyone wants to be a mentor before becoming a learner.

I noticed a trend on LinkedIn that people use the layoffs as an excuse to preach others that if you constantly upskill and learn then you will be safe from layoffs. 

To any freshers who believe in this crap listen this - The folks who got laid off from companies are not in any way underskilled. I've seen my colleagues get laid off at my previous company who were extremely talented and responsible for building products from scratch. 

These companies layoff people randomly and not skill based. They choose the people who are drawing more salary (often the most skilled) and fire them in the name of cost cutting. So, how does upskilling will help this situation?

Note that, the current tech market is unstable and will continue to be for next few years. Upskilling may get you up the corporate ladder but it won't in anyway save you from impending layoffs. The so-called influencers preaching this should STOP.

NOTICE this post, how this guy conveniently skipped mentioning Google layoffs in the list, since he currently works ar Google 😆

People who lecure to upskill to prevent layoffs need to stop 🛑

I swear dude, the subtle condescension is so annoying. "Don't be in your comfort zone" and shit - as if (most) people aren't already trying their best to stay up to date and keep their skills sharp. Sounds like classic victim blaming, if you ask me.

Recently the CHRO of my company called me into a discussion on improving  WORK LIFE BALANCE.  Wow. I just cannot understand. Look at this. 
1. Most companies work 5 days a week. (Except retail operations). So you get 52 weeks x 2. 104 days. 
2. 30 days annual leav
3. 9 days statutory holidays. 
4. Operational holidays. 3. 
145 days of 365 days corporate people don’t come to office. And in a hybrid format even more. 
It is these corporate vultures who want work life Balance. How can u balance your life if u r unable to do it in 145 days. 
So Narayana murthy is right - work hard like 80% of india. Who have almost no weekly off. Just saying.

The number of influencers trying to sell their courses on coding and systems design has just went nuts. Anyone and everyone who is working in FAANG / MAANG/ WTFAANG seems to be selling dreams to everyone that this is how you get into and sustain into large scale companies.

Once these engineers join after clearing interviews (which are more or less a repeat of the same questions being asked for a thousand times), they find it hard to scale themselves to solve the real world challenges that are thrown at them. And then the complaining starts from all the angles.

For the sake of it, FAANG and all other such top tier companies are not gonna help you once your mental peace if completely f…ed up. 

If you think you are genuinely interested in solving issues at scale, spend some real time learning the basics, how the day to day software you use works, spend some time actually researching and banging your head trying to grasp how things are, because most of the challenging issues you are gonna face in your upcoming career won’t have youtube videos available to explain you why they happen.

Stop filling the pockets of influencers to teach you things which you should be putting efforts to learn by exploring yourself.

I started at a pre-rev startup for 10K per month internship as an app developer when I was in my 7th semester of engineering. By the 8th semester, i became a full time employee for 6LPA. That was about 12 months ago. I have great rapport with my CTO and CEO. I received an offer for 8LPA from a well known company, my current employer matched it. I received a counter offer for 11 LPA (10+1). Even though I like the people i don't feel overly optimistic about this given the market circumstances. Should I make the switch? Really very confused.

Working, then working out, trying to eat right, and trying to stay connected with friends on weekends feels taxing now and I feel and blame myself for losing my circle day by day as I'm too exhausted to make efforts anymore.

The night feels worse cause the silence of the city makes me hear the noise inside me even more evidently. 🥺

What do you think about the product management courses in the market? 

Every PM certification I see, it's creating robots, making learners adapt to similar way of speaking, same jargons, same processes.

So, just to be clear, I have no grudges against the people, but basically I don't like the core idea of doing a paid "guidance or mentorship" session. Examples being career guidance or famous resume reviews on Topmate

See, The very basic idea of asking for guidance is that you are in a vulnerable state and someone 'helps' you out by sharing their experience & giving back to the community in that way. This entire concept is thrown away when you Charge Money for it, it's no longer a help relationship - I can understand people are busy and have less time for mentorship, but that doesn't justify charging for it

There is another tangible problem in my opinion. When you Charge for a guidance session, it gives a transactional outlook for you - As in you never want to go really deep into conversations because it's a paid one time thing and as soon as your 30 minutes is gone, you have earned your prize. I know it's difficult to describe in words but when you do something for 1-time money, it's very difficult to not have a purely transactional perspective to it . This is something I have personally observed when I used to be in a competitive activity & did paid mentorship Sessions.

There is also a 3rd issue of inexperienced people giving out paid gyaan on issues which they don't have an idea of (I saw someone looking for their first full time job and yet running paid "career guidance" session on Topmate) but lets keep that for another day

ps : This is not against People whose job is advisory, that's a much more formal relationship by nature & there are enough checks and balances.

So, me and my good friend were casually discussing how crazy the job market is and how we are unable to get into a good job, especially when she has over 3YoE and is really good at frontend web development.

She then casually asked me "Should we be really trying this hard to get into a job that we like, as I feel that AI will take over a big part of the IT workforce in the next 5 years?"

Though we did have a friendly argument, I strongly believe that it still needs more time than that bcz IT jobs, especially we developers, are not just limited to coding. And given the fact that OpenAI is learning off of GitHub repos, which are basically code examples are averagely written code, not well written proficient ones. 

But, in General, what do you think about AI and how it is gradually dominating the IT sector ?

Do you really think AI will take over in the next 5 years ?

I completed education from tier 1 colleges (MBA and Engineering both from coveted IIM and IIT). After MBA, I joined Wall Street bank and life was really good. Was enjoying the perks of a MNC although the work was also excruciating but was an overall good experience.

Left it for a startup (fast growth kida in me led this decision). Worked in the startup across multiple roles, learned a lot of new things. Tried staying away from office politics and earned a good name in the circle. But growth (read pay) was not that enticing and was not growing hence decided to leave. Was naive enough to quote this reason to business head and HR as well. Obviously it didn't go well with anyone.

Joined startup2, changed cities and joined it. The role was similar, although my manager was an epitome of a toxic manager. Was doing good but he always was able to find some or the other mistake in my work. If he would not find any mistake then he would suggest some tangential hypothesis and then reprimand me for not thinking about it. Was so toxic that I didn't take leave when my wife was hospitalized and giving birth to our child.
Tried doing everything possible but couldn't save the job and got laid off in the 1st lay off wave.

Was shattered. Confidence was at rock bottom. Tried searching for roles. Luckily I got into startup3 who had remote work at that time. Although I joined the marketing team (which was not at all related to my previous work) thus creating a mess of my profile.
Worked hard but in a "restructuring" exercise got laid off again.

Within a year 2 lay offs with random work and no concrete direction in work. 
Now searching for roles but not able to find anything suitable as I was in non-core roles and in this difficult time everyone is looking for cheap resources with 1-3 yoe and not looking for 7+ yoe with generalist profile.

Contemplating starting from zero in Marketing or learning coding/Data science so that can start my career again with right basics.

Getting taste of money early in life shapes career very differently. Opinion?

Depends person to person and how much money really. 
  
 In my case, when I used to earn meagre decent(say top 10% of country salary), I used to save a lot, never spend anywhere unless absolutely needed etc. But, once I started earning top 2-4% and living in Bangalore within 1.6yrs of my career, I became too engrossed in chasing money and spending on luxury. For me, I believe, too much money especially when I didn't think I deserved it, made me into someone who didn't focus on his skills and became complacent.  
   I am trying to fix that now 
  
 My learning - Never focus on money initially, always upskill, always earn what you are worth and work towards increasing your worth! 
 At the same time, know your roots, be grounded and work on building effective relationships(realised that this is what makes me truly happy)

The internet/apps gave people a platform. Everyone is seeking to be popular without putting in the effort. There's no need for 'Deep Work' anymore. Everyone wants to give Gyan and life-lessons on LinkedIn. 

I just lament the subversion of goals and ambition into a phoney-seemingly-all-knowing-charade on one of the social media platforms.

Is it okay for a tech enthusiast to not be interested in hands on coding full fledged or maybe not be an expert at it.

I feel that if I give more time and effort in learning new stuffs and tech, I can excel at my job as a software engineer and even upskil myself but after 4-5 years, I still love to learn things and be updated about latest tech and do projects of my own but at a lesuirely pace without the anxiety about job or any interview..

But since I was in school I had too much interest towards business, ideas, startups and now that I am 28, i feel i really want to take that leap of faith with my entrepreneurial journey.

I have couple of ideas I am quite passionate in the FMCG domain and couple ideas for tech based as well.

From my heart, i always am into tech whether with job or jobless. But I don't like hardcore coding and stuff now.. Kind of done with it..

So my question is, has anyone else felt the same?
Has anyone from tech sector plunged into FMCG sector with zero knowldge about that sector?

Has anyone with average knowledge in tech industry tried to build a hardcore startup around tech by hiring someone else?

Please share your experiences and advice and not from success stories of Rags to Riches that even I can find on Google😂
