 Exits are great. They end up getting a similar compensation, as comp at MBB is already quite high.

Hey. I'm a post graduate from a tier 1 MBA college currently working as a management consultant in one of the Big4s (<1 year). Compensation is good (~30 lpa), can't complain. Work has been stagnant for a while firm wide though and have just been focused on upskilling myself.

With the interactions I've had till now, I don't really see myself building any hard skills other than data analysis in excel, power BI and business acumen here. (I might just be ill informed here, but are these transferrable skills I can take to the industry? I know data analysis is the bread and butter for business everywhere but I'm talking about specific software and whatnot used in companies) 


1. I'm just worried about the exit opportunities that I might have later on. Can anyone shed some light on what kind of exit opportunities one can expect?

2. Let's say I want to get into the operations side of the industry. Is there anything I can do if I'm not necessarily involved in such projects?

If only there was an organisation that could charge me millions per day per bum (ideally non-practitioners) to confirm my suspicions in PowerPoint form.

Understanding the problem? Design? Waste of time!!! You need a "software factory" code-test-deploy. From the same guys who predicted the cloud is a fad and everyone should build their own data centre, or cellular tech will never take off. 

Sadly, there would be many listening to them and make changes accordingly and suffer badly.

The hiring has been over optimised, the batch of 2024 and the summer intern batch, count of new hires should go back to 2019 levels

How is the promotion scene looking like? Are you hearing of headcount rationalization in the India offices? 

Folks were expecting natural attrition will help with HC nos, I don't think it has really played out that way

Got to know from multiple people that were joining top consulting firms that their onboarding is deferred by 6 months (across places like Bain, McK etc)

Already enough existing employees aren’t on active cases, and so it seems like they’ve hired more than there is demand for cases, people who have actually been sitting on the bench for months 

If demand does not return, this could really stack up and lead to a problematic situation

I'm currently working at Google, and I'd decided to soon quit for getting an MBA (expecting admits to IIM-A/B/C) to break into consulting, specifically MBB or even Product Management.

Honestly, I'm interested in it for industry exposure, the chance to climb the ladder quickly, and, let's be real, the fat paychecks. 

But then I did a lot of research and, dang, it's all doom and gloom. Is the work-life balance in consulting really that bad?

It would be easy to find out who I am if I say anything more but I have worked in cross-collaborative roles across my careers spanning multiple decades in Big4s. I have led several projects for Govt of India and Public Sector Organizations. Personally I have worked in multidisciplinary fields mostly in IT and Databases. I have recently worked in Solution designing and Enterprise Architecture for many large orgs. Most of this is Digital strategy for many offline first businesses.

Insight #1:
"Build as much pedigree as you can."

This means going to the right schools, the right clubs, the right academics and the right extra-curriculars.
This also means that you need to get good brands on your resume early and fast. Working in NA, EMEA, Singapore and Australia is typically a plus point.

You typically need to go to M7 schools or IIM-BLACKI or ISB to even have a remote shot at getting in.
This means great GRE/GMAT scores are a necessity. This also means that you need to really nail your LORs. Finally, you need to have exceptional spikes that changes the way people perceive you and your potential translating into a resume. 

Insight #2:
"They care about optics a lot."
The way you look, speak and conduct yourself is probably the biggest thing you can do to improve your odds of getting in. Being at the right places is important. This means if you are already in social circles with Management Consulting folks then some of their habits will rub off on you. This also means that playing Tennis, going to the Gym, going Golfing/Squash/ whatever rich guy sport, the right parties, restaurants and clubs is an underrated advantage.


Insight #3:
"Prepare for Case Interviews"
Case interviews are a crucial part of the consulting recruitment process. Practice solving case studies and seek guidance from mentors or resources to improve your case interview skills. 'Case in Point' is your fucking bible and you need to make sure that you can work your way around guesstimates and reach a conclusive solution in an insight driven manner.

Insight #4:
"Be prepared to walk away."

MBB is not the end of the world and you can out do your peers in terms of Money earned per unit effort spent easily in other fields. So, don't care about what happens. Double down on your Plan B instead.

But if you want to travel the world, walk shoulder to shoulder with some of the smartest people in the business then it is not a bad option.
