My fellow IT people

I know a lot might be running through people's minds right now: layoff, job security and still a lot. i think it is time let us all talk on it. For me I am freelancing in a startup and want to get a job in tech sooner wau guys continue the loop

I have many friends who are into IT and Tech(read again Tech not IT). Whenever I am speaking to the IT folks and understand their aspirations I always find that they have this strange thing mentioned every now and then i.e. Going to the Clients location(all overseas) for a couple of months and coming back or extending for a longer duration say a few years and purchasing a house/flat back in India. I don't understand how going to the client's location(even if it's on Mars) and earning $$$ can be life's ultimate goal. What am I missing here? I am not able to understand since I have always believed that life's ultimate goal would be always bigger for people(achievable/non achievable are different things). Does working in IT make people so myopic that they are destined to think in the straight line process and wait for that token(at least what I have heard is that it's some weird selection they do to select and send you abroad on the projects). May be this thought process makes most of the crowd stick to the systems for years and decades at work. Is it considered that bigger of an achievement OR Is it a way to make people stick around for longer duration ? What am I missing here ? How can life goals be so small ?

Hi, guys I'm just wondering about the general practice of referrals followed by everyone here. Do you only refer people you've worked with and no to be good, or do you forward referrals of unknown people as well? A couple of my former colleagues periodically hit me up, I mostly ignore their messages (cause all they'll message is "Hi" or "Hey" and ain't no one's got the time for that) but I know it's about getting them a job (because of all the times in the past I've been polite and responded to their "Hi"s). While I do not currently have enough clout in the industry to push around referrals, the thing is, they're simply not good at their jobs, or at least upto my standards and I'd feel uncomfortable referring someone their name knowing they won't do a good job! I don't want my referrals to reflect badly on me... So, just wondering about people's opinions here!

I am 24 and It's been 2 years in the IT industry not earning but gaining knowledge. But I fear Like Will I be that capable to Bring everything for my family. Am I going to survive in this industry for a long time or should I go for the GOVERNMENT JOB so that Our family can have a stable income and Peace full life with less salary. Unlike in IT No security of Job and for the next 10 years I have to compete to stay alive in IT. I AM GOING THROUGH A CONFUSION PHASE DOING NOTHING PRODUCTIVE IN BOTH DIRECTIONS.

I am joining an e-commerce startup next week. They sent an old used laptop. Old laptop is OK, companies do it all the time but this laptop was dirty. They didn't even try to refurbish it. I feel pissed off. What should I do?

I am just speechless. Can't believe that this can happen.
