"Navigating Frustration: My 2 Years at Barclays"

Hello everyone, I'd like to share my thoughts on my two-year journey at Barclays: Lately I’ve putting in a lot of effort to excel and learn, I've noticed a focus on speed over code quality. This seems to be a consistent attitude across the entire team, including senior leaders. My daily routine includes working on improving code quality myself , while also meeting project deadlines and commitments to the user. However, it's disheartening that my manager doesn't prioritize the process of code improvement. Additionally, best coding practices are not being followed consistently. While I'm committed to performing well in my role, I'm facing a dilemma: Should I put aside my focus on code improvement, even though it's a valuable learning opportunity, and solely align with my manager's directives? Furthermore, I have future aspirations of changing roles. How can I effectively manage my time between preparing for a new position and addressing the current challenges at hand? Should I detach from my current role to concentrate solely on preparation? Or is there a way to find a middle ground and balance both aspects? Your insights would be greatly appreciated ! #CareerAdvices

75% focus on preparation + 25% focus on improving software design/code quality at current employer has worked best for me in the past. No point arguing with dumb managers. Becoming a better engineer is your responsibility first.

I think you should always keep yourself and your learnings first. The practice to write code well according to coding principles does matter a lot in the long run . Just meeting the deadlines and neglecting how the code is written will work for now but it’ll then become a habit. I am not saying that you should ignore the office work but you should be able to ask the manager for a feasible deadline explaining why you need it in a confident manner. So that in the meantime you can improve your code as well. Talking about your personal goals , you should focus on them definitely because office work is important but not more than your personal aims.
