Should you embrace 'bhai - bhai' culture?

Currently working in a startup company

Usually, I do my work in the given time, but due to some dependencies on me and after meetings on around 6-7PM some tasks are allocated to me that should be picked on the next day but due to "bhai plz Kar de" culture it is picked on the same which is not sometimes favorable and will cost around ending my day around 11 or 12

Should this be embraced and how to tackle these things?

I used to take these requests and do them the same day out of good will. The ability to say no, comes with some experience. Give it 1 2 months you'll start saying no. It comes naturally and slowly

this, agree with this, but i always prefer to log off at 05:30. if meetings are there, better do it during business hours.

due to the global team structure, we may have to join some late evening calls, but just calls. never ever give me any requests because i’ll have 50+ challenges that can only be resolved the next day. i never entertain such requests at all.

be extra productive on business hours, and don’t give a damn the other times, my policy!

Then discuss with your team and if you need to stretch , login late by that time frame which you are extending for evening support. That way probably they will probably understand.

Have plans in these hours. A date. A sick family member. A pet who is waiting for you. A doctor’s appointment. A vehicle service or laundry pickup. If you always say yes, they’ll never value your time. Valuing your own time is one of the most important things you’ll do in life.

The same companies that ask you to do this, will not reciprocate the ‘bhai-bhai’ culture during appraisal/layoffs season. Please don’t put in extra hours if you don’t feel like it. It just shows lack of prioritisation and disrespect for others’ time. You can do it iff it gets added to your ‘proof of work’ - otherwise, chuck it and say “not my circus, not my monkeys”.

I would suggest to start working on same day as they request, do some progress on the task, until it's not too late. After that, just share an update that this much is completed and will do the rest tomorrow, and complete it as first thing in mng.

I generally do this, and this helped me in not declining any requests from the team, so I am on good grounds and also, I don't work that late.
