Should you embrace 'bhai - bhai' culture?

I am not comfortable with late night work but my team is mostly related to delivery boys so i am required to do night deployments and late night work which leaves me with brain headache in the morning and scattered sleep. What should i do and is the software engineering about late night work only ?

Context: I work at a startup, it's a pretty chill work environment, very flexible, hybrid model. Everything is great. Problem: They take flexible work hours too seriously, I have meetings at 10 PM on weekdays and almost every weekend there's some work which they need the next day in most cases but apparently have to keep the meeting on the weekend with no prior notice. I mean, i like going to office twice a week around 11-12 and coming back around 7, wfh when I have a few meetings that day but is it normal to work on weekends? and after work hours? P.S. I've only been in this company for a month and joined as a fresher. Now that I've put it down, this is such a gen z problem lol But what should I do?

Hi am a fresher working in an IT company as SDE intern. Wanted to know if most of the Indian companies follow strict schedule? This is because I have heard people doing 9-5 job. Often they are having meetings after 5pm and sometimes working on even Saturdays. Does this thing holds for Service based companies like Infosys, Wipro, TCS etc or its true for FAANG or famous startups as well?

Rant I have this person who has been nominated as POC from New Zealand. I have been trying and chasing the person to schedule calls, and till now I have rescheduled 4 times because he is now showing up on the time slots HE communicated. Even though I adjusted my work schedules according to his time slots, given I start my work as per USA timing. That's highly unprofessional. It goes like- Me: Hey! Let me know what time suits you? Him: my calendar is free from so and so. Please schedule 😃 On the day of call Him: Hey can you reschedule to * absurd timings which don't suit IST* Or Him: I'm unable to join, my calendar is blocked I'm so frustrated. I have messaged him ( in corporate speak) that I have already rescheduled so many times based on your schedule ( which you communicated) I would appreciate it if you show up. I am already working beyond my standard working hours for you.

I am preparing for the Staff engineer role. Have put my resignation without any offer in hand due to being highly underpaid, no recognition towards my high-value work, poor management, toxic work culture and work-life balance. I lose all my motivation to study gauzing at the things I am yet to study for the interviews. I don't want to settle with another mediocre company and stay under paid just like today. At the same time I don't have any monetory reserve to feel safe on financial side. Please help me with your words and past experiences of being in a similar situation.

So it’s barely been a month since I’ve joined this company and my manager has already started dumping his workload to me on weekends and at odd hours late in the night. Now he’s not a horrible person but I hate how normalised this culture is at this entire organisation. I get it if I’m a founder or working at a startup, I have to be prepared to hustle but not at a big corporation. And the irony is that I once needed something urgently from someone based in Europe from our team but my manager asked me to call him the next day since that person was out of his working hours while I was on a call with my manager at 1:18am….. I’ve also noticed how casually he calls me everyday post 9pm to ask for updates or give a new task. My work hours end by 6pm. I really want to to establish certain boundaries, and not want to work on weekends. I’m a biker, and I’ve been cancelling all my biking plans on weekends just cause of this. How do I go about this without it negatively affecting my ratings/impressions etc.?? I have a life smh. (Writing this while I’m working on a Sunday)

It's been a year I'm working with one company that has good name. But everymonth I have 40% of the time where I work more than 11+hrs (with food and all activities I work 16 hrs sometimes) How do You guys balance this? I tried balancing this but my manager and lead are telling that I'm not taking taking ownership these days. Earlier when I used to work more I delivered on time and took lot of ownership. But when I work less and do just my work or logout after 10 hrs it's affecting this. Happened with anyone?

Nothing against those who love them. It's just that I would rather like to spend the time with my plans. But often, you don't always have a choice.

There has been scenarios in which a hard working smart employee doesn't get promotion or hike. Whereas few who are ready to share beds, go to pubs and do quid quo pro are getting every benefit out of it. This highly demotivates the hard working female emps. So have u faced any such? Or do you know the full story of someone doing it ? Bcoz at startups there is no time restrictions. Sometimes late night work happens and so many things are linked with it. I hope I don't need to elaborate.

I saw Oppenheimer recently, and there Oppenheimer had request the officials to have the families of the scientists come along (to a very secret, highly sensitive base for research of atomic bombs) because the scientists would need an environment that is conducive for their brain to work. Contrast that to my pretty regular law firm, why can’t my partners understand that the environment where a brain can function is not the environment of constant criticism? I have had my performance review and I have been scored well. I know that I am not stupid, I know that my work product, if not great, is decently good enough. But every time I have to talk to my partner/ PA on some work, I get a weird anxiety that what will I be yelled at for this time. I had been yelled at for reminding my partner of a deadline. After email the work product, sending a message on teams, I have been yelled at for not calling my partner up (wasn’t something pressing/ urgent deliverable). My seniors say that the trust me on my work. To me at least- Trust doesn’t mean I’ll give good work 100 times, trust means- one time if I don’t meet your expectations, you’ll trust to give me benefit of the doubt and not be schooled. It is a norm to long hours and it is a norm to work over the weekends. Then why am I made feel guilty if I wanna go home early (at 5/6 pm) one day? Why am I made feel guilty for asking for a leave?
