Is there a way to identify mutual funds who have invested in mamaearth IPO? I'll definitely never invest via those mutual funds again and these mutual funds should be highlighted publicly for investing in a company with no fundamentals.

You are right I did not buy Nykaa as their management is shady for me at that time when I was putting money . However, I think the best time to buy Nykaa is fine but even now it’s a decent buy the more people hate a company the more likely it’s stock will pump plus the most hated stocks rally the hardest.

Hello good people of grapevine,

I have recently started my full-time job as a software engineer, and wanted to start my journey into investing.

After doing a bit of research, I feel SIPs in mutual funds is the way to go forward at this point. For now I want to start putting 20k into MF SIPs every month. I took a look at a few MFs which were very high risk but over a period of 3-5 years yielded great returns (50%) as well. While the low to moderate risk MFs yielded low returns (5%).

Though the risk is high, but seeing stable returns over a large period of time, how safe is it to invest in very high risk MFs and not incur losses?

Any other advice is also thoroughly appreciated

I invested in Mutual fund through SIP.
Total profit was 6k after 1 year (Total invested amount around 60k)
Today I saw monthly NPS statement of June 2024 month. This NPS contribution consist of company contribution and person contribution of ₹100 per month.

Total gain is 13399 for 60397 total contribution.
I am surprised to see higher returns on my NPS than my Mutual fund investment.

For any investor, Mutual funds after a point become less exciting mode of investments. Also last 4 years spoiled everyone in the market. I was in a similar space and was trying to pick a PMS to accelerate my folio, but looks like returns aren’t too exciting ( cost of PMS > MF). Additionally, I am not able to see any consistency in top rankings over the different time-periods.

Friday Fin - PMS Vs MF 🤔

DISCLAIMER - I have no intentions to become a finfluencer. These posts are just to trigger personal finance conversations as I see many noobs chasing small/mid caps without a fundamental understanding. 

*3 interesting parameters to select MFs!*

1. Standard Deviation - It reflects the range of returns from the investment amount. 10% SD on 1000 rs investment can return from 900 to 1100. Higher the SD, riskier the investment.

2. Beta - This reflects the downside of MF against the benchmark. Beta < 1, fund has better downside protection. If Beta > 1, fund might fall more if markets see a correction. 

3. Alpha - It reflects upside on fund when risk-adjusted against benchmark. Risk adjustment in easier terms can be absorbed as if benchmark index would have taken similar volatile stocks what would have been returns associated with it. To connect the dots, a fund can have higher positive returns with higher negative returns. Alpha will absorb downside and reflect upside after that. 

Exercise - Check the SD, Alpha, Beta of any two funds in the same category and share your learnings. 

For any category of funds (flexicap, small, large) these 3 parameters can be used for comparisons. Few more parameters are there but those can be explained later.

Both indexes began diverging sometime close to when Fed started to aggressively hike rates. It appears that the post-COVID rally was more favourable to the S&P but NIFTY is currently outperforming on absolute returns.

My idea is fundamentally simple. Financial prudence during the raging recovery paid off for us, the economy appears resilient and poised to do well in the near to mid-term. It also reflects that markets are pricing recessionary risk very differently to both markets.
