I know this will sound like a very biased opinion but just sharing my 2 cents of today’s market.

The way with highest probability of success, money and ensuring a better future for your future generations is to startup.

It has the highest risk, highest reward. But in today’s landscape: where inflation is always higher than your hike, there’s no guarantee of employment even in next 1 years, the effort to remain in top 1% is humongous and many other reasons like that, really make me feel that if you’re able to start a company and even capture 0.1% of market who’s willing to pay something for your service/product, that’s all you need. Of course the struggle doesn’t end there and you have to keep working for as long as possible? But your capacity to earn and provide for generations to come is much higher than working for someone else.

The guaranteed way to success (if there’s one)

It depends, founding a startup is a 24/7. For me, I need the time that 9-5 jobs provide after work for my health issues. Also my current company is doing a lot of layoffs so everyday I start with uncertainty and anxiety, but cannot quit cos I need the income. We are definitely moving backwards in growth in this corporate slavery, expensive education and inflation. In India, Our entire identities is based on our jobs as though your life is useless if you don’t have one!!

IIT grad here building a venture backed startup. I think 99% of folks here believe that venture backed founders are super entitled and in a much "cosier" position than employees

Just sharing a few facts about our journey so far if it helps anyone improve their perspectives-

1) Paying ourselves 33% of our campus salary & 60% of what we are paying to our employees (Talking about Pure Base Salary here, not including ESOPs)

2) Insane stress - You basically have to raise money to build (esp if its deeptech because of the high fixed costs) and there are predefined metrics you have to always chase, sometimes just beyond yourselves. 

Your product will be copied if it's good because well, they always have more money than you. You work 7 days a week for insane hours, chasing metrics required to be "afloat" 

3) 99% of venture backed startups result in 0 liquidity gain for founders. So basically in all likeliness, everything is for a net negative return compared to if we took the campus job

So, when you wholeheartedly bash founders as if they are sitting On a goldmine while you are toiling for THEIR gold Treasure, just understand that more likely than not, there is not really any gold but rather an irrational hope they are clinging to

Also, Yes-we pay above market to our employees (100% hike for the last one) but the truth is some startups just Can't afford it. And ironically, there is a much higher looking down on these startups with meagurely paid founders rather than giants like Tech Mahindra paying peanuts to their employees while having a 1000% salary hike for the executives. 

Yeah, most startups need to do better but please appreciate if someone is atleast trying to do better because trust me, it's INSANELY HARD.. 

The number of posts I see about Flipkart making hundreds millionaires is way too less than the ones I see about pinpointing at every single mistake early stage startups do & I just wanted to express my opinion on it

People way overestimate the life of founders

Oh no poor founders, they have to pay fair salary to their employees.

I am addressing folks who have progressed in their careers enough to earn at least 30 LPA.

If you are earning this much in India, you are already in the creamy layer of lifestyle. You can afford a decent house, a decent car and probably save up some assets for children's education (A lot of people bring up the expensive school fees). 

If you get a salary hike from 30LPA to 40LPA, there is a high chance that your lifestyle will not change that much. Your savings will go up, but still it will take years to retire early in either case. It's quite apparent that if you want to improve your lifestyle at this stage (highest-end middle class), you will require an income source capable of providing leverage and exponential growth.

Barring a few folks I know, everyone else is busy grinding leetcode, mugging up system design for their next job switch or even worse, kissing ass for the next promotion. 

Why don't enough people start learning about business on the side and slowly start investing their free time in learning everything they can about it ? I am sure it will be a much better time investment if you play your cards correctly for a long enough time (I am pretty sure this is still a quicker path to riches as compared to 30 years of SIP investments).

Note: I completely understand that many people have monthly payment obligations like EMIs. And that's why my question is about 'aspirations'. I am not asking 'Why are people not leaving their jobs to pursue entrepreneurship?'. I am rather asking 'Why are people not even thinking about anything else apart from the next (disappointing) hike?'

Being an entrepreneur isn't about skills, its about temperament. 
  
 The former is coachable, the latter isn't.  
  
 That's why you don't have everyone jump head first into being an entrepreneur.

The problem with Indian founders is they wan to be paid good but they don’t want to pay good. This guy runs an “AI powered” startup where he matches international clients with Indian freelancers. Also, he sells this idea to Indian freelancers by calling it a high paying international remote job. Dude lives in SF. Is this what entrepreneurship has reduced down to???

Just yesterday I took an auto ride on nammayatri. The driver was very chatty and towards the end of the trip, when I paid 164 for the ride, he said, if this was ola they would have taken 40% and given me the meter rate of 90. Big words from the ceo whose company charges this level of margin on people who are trying to make ends meet. Driver said he doesn’t use uber or ola anymore, since the launch of namma yatri.

It is fun sometimes but I feel that's 20% off it. There are 99 reasons wherein you feel like giving up daily but somehow you stick along & keep going. The stories we read online or anywhere else of riches are quite few but you feel a complete let down wherein somebody made insane money in 3 years & you are struggling for 5 years+ making some money but not what you imagined.

I run a profitable bootstrapped business for 5+ years & some days are hard coz everybody is hopping on new tech (eg: Crypto, AI) & you might be doing the same old stuff & don't know how to pick yourselves up to learn something new. People are getting funded & making insane money in secondaries, etc. 

Then dealing with bullshit on the internet. Everyone on LinkedIn is successful, putting numbers & gyaan. Some days are overwhelming & you feel being super rich comes with a lot of factors in your favor & tradeoffs as well. Bas, tumhara number aaya nahi hai ya shayad hi aayega. Rant over.

Rant: Entrepreneurship is lonely & exhuasting

I’ve friends who run venture backed startups. And I’ve heard something similar. More power to all the founders who’re trying make a dent someway or the other.

So, I have been job hunting for the past 10 months since my layoff. Everytime I reach the final round, got rejected with common as well as absurd reasons. So, since the last 2 months, I've been looking for opportunities that I turn it into a full time job of my own, and maybe eventually a business of my own.

But a lot of people with whom I shared my future plans were like "Bruh, don't jump into running a business because you failed to get into a job since your layoff". Why is their introspect like this ? Are they being jealous? Are they being genuine? Am I missing something? Confused.

What are your opinions on this ? Is it wrong to start something of my own when I can't find the opportunities that I want via a full time job as an employee of a company ?
