Transitioning from Peer to Leader: Need Advice!
I’m reaching out to get some advice and hear your thoughts on a situation I’m facing at work. Over the past few years, I’ve got promoted and with time asked to start leading projects for my team 🏋🏻 Initially, I was working with colleagues who joined at the same time as I did and are from the same graduation year. Our team originally consisted of 7 members. As I transitioned into a leadership role 🍄, I tried to maintain a friendly approach with everyone. However, I faced resistance from some colleagues. Despite my efforts to ask for their help in a friendly manner, they often complained to our manager, creating a tense atmosphere 😟. Over time, some of these colleagues left for better opportunities and pay, but I’m still working with 3 colleagues who were there from the beginning. New team members have since joined, and now we have a mix of 3 old colleagues and 3 new ones. However, the dynamic hasn’t changed much. I find it challenging to drive projects effectively may be because of my previous colleagues, and now even some new ones, don’t seem to like my leadership 🤔. I’m naturally a friendly person, and I treat everyone, regardless of their level, with the same respect and approachability 😊. I’m beginning to wonder if this might be part of the issue. Have any of you experienced something similar? How did you navigate the transition from peer to leader, especially with colleagues who may seem struggling to accept your new role? I’d love to hear any tips or insights on how to build trust, set clear expectations, and effectively lead a team that includes both old and new members. Peace ✌️
