My company issued glassdoor and ambition box links. Instructions are “be generous”. Honestly I would have given 0 if possible. 

Why? Here are few reasons- 6 days week, 10-8pm, if you leave by 8 you get a taunt in return, 

the founder will mention things like ownership but wouldn’t let you do anything on your own, his thoughts>>> any logical statements

ALL PUBLIC HOLIDAYS ARE WORKING 

2 DAY LONG LEAVE IS NOT ACCEPTABLE EVEN IF ITS AN EMERGENCY 

Expectations- put me and my company above everything else

So I interviewed for a SaaS company serving US clients. I got selected after three rounds (basic email chat, built a project, technical coding round at last) and got selected. 

Finally, it was time to discuss salary and joining date with the CEO. He was impressed by the about section on my portfolio, where I mentioned that I like to go on treks, hikes, read books, lift weights, go on a run, etc. During our call he mentioned that everyone at the startup works 6-7days a week, 12hrs a day and asked if I'd be fine with it as I have a "happening life".

I said that I'm not used to it but I'll manage and work in appropriate working hours. He seemed to agree on it.

But he ghosted me after that, and when I pinged him in the email thread; he said he's not moving ahead with me because my other properties won't allow me to "work as much as other employees".

How am I supposed to react to this lol

I didn't get selected because... I have a happening life?

I quit my last organisation (a famous UPI company) in 2020 because, they still are in old technology. No cloud computing, no kubernates, no terraform. Their entire baremetal infra are in 2 DCs (Mumbai and Bangalore). Leadership ideas are outdated. I was very much bored and looking for a change.

Why did you resign?

Amount of effort i put and the salary i got was not proportional. 14 hrs to get 30k salary as a fresher. I had understood that I deserve better - thus i moved to get better pay and better wlb (which I got in swiggy)

- My employer hired me when it was Fully WFH, now they force me to join office after 8 months of joining.
- Attend 5 days/week
- No hybrid
- Biometric system to track attendance 
- Complete 180 hours in a month or pay cut
- No relocation support
- Less appraisal (~5%) citing market conditions.
- Removed unlimited leaves just a few days below announcing WFO.

FYI: I was named best employee for 2023 Q1

Toxic company traits

I'm unable to understand what sort of entitlement does the leadership hold to ask their employees to work their ass off without any compensation for their efforts.

Like literally bro just said that it's a 7 day work week for the next quarter and fuck your personal life and doesn't even bother to highlight that there would be any gratification for the same.

The mid-senior leadership just acts as pawns and complies with this and in case you highlight this shit show you're fired.

Sharing frustrations with starting up a business. In my career I have raised over $30m over multiple rounds.

Co-founders in non-business roles get pushed out by politics. Sharing control with co-founders is messy, inconvenient, time consuming. Money lets you hire people who have to answer to you.

If you are not the main ‘Business person’ in a startup high chance you are disposable, no matter what skills you have. And it sucks to spend so much effort only to get bullied out and left with nothing.

Some investors will follow you on social media, if your business is not growing QoQ don’t post anything on social media that implies you are not working every weekend. They will ask why you are not working.

 If you are CEO, be ready for every random person to tell you how to run your business. Not in a ‘friendly advice’ kind of way, if you are the CEO you have a target on your back.

 Investors don’t know about your industry or have very dated knowledge. Some will just say random tips like ‘try web3’ or ‘try SaaS’ and blame you for following their advice when it fails.

 Your progress is measured against fraud companies who fake numbers, or the 1 in thousands who succeed. Get made to feel like you are failing to live up to super high expectations constantly.

 Employees work half your hours, off sick usuall one day a week, deliver next to nothing and expect 20% hikes every year because that’s what their friends make, or they read some dumb startup hires freshers at 20LPA. 

Smooth talking people with the same idea as you, no traction, never shipped a product in life, will raise a huge seed round due to 'pedigree' and spend it all on self promotion. You will always be compared to these clowns who find ways to lecture others while building nothing of value.

Dark side of starting up.

 This has become just more prevalent over time. Confidently advice learnings from startups that are faking GMV or PMF metrics :)

Recently the CHRO of my company called me into a discussion on improving  WORK LIFE BALANCE.  Wow. I just cannot understand. Look at this. 
1. Most companies work 5 days a week. (Except retail operations). So you get 52 weeks x 2. 104 days. 
2. 30 days annual leav
3. 9 days statutory holidays. 
4. Operational holidays. 3. 
145 days of 365 days corporate people don’t come to office. And in a hybrid format even more. 
It is these corporate vultures who want work life Balance. How can u balance your life if u r unable to do it in 145 days. 
So Narayana murthy is right - work hard like 80% of india. Who have almost no weekly off. Just saying.

The BS about work life balance

Apparently the company is trying really hard to do damage control but the cat is out of the bag. They’ve been abhorrent in the way they conduct their company.

This is a tight slap to anyone who expects unreasonable working hours without fair compensation.

**Story**

On October 7th, their reporting manager set some alarming expectations right off the bat. The manager demanded unpaid overtime and excessive work hours beyond what's typically considered reasonable.

When the employee tried to establish healthy boundaries and bring up work-life balance, the manager's response was dismissive and mocking. He belittled these concepts as "fancy terms" and "Western developed nation behavior," implying they had no place in this work environment. The manager even ridiculed the employee's desire for personal time to read and exercise, treating these basic needs as mere excuses.

There's a significant difference between voluntarily putting in extra effort for your own passionate project versus being coerced into overwork by an established, profitable company.

WTF is wrong with the founder these days?

Just moved from a WFH startup to a Full WFO legacy corporate company.

These corpo people talk so much, too much restrictions to get access or to create a MVP, a lot of unnecessary paperwork/ email loops.

I feel sleepy all day and these people find and make you speak hell lot making me confused and feeling that I have done no work and what will I say about deliverables 🥲.


Side note: renovation going on so not getting any corner + the setting are like this getting it is difficult 😭

Any suggestions or I am over reacting 😄

Rant and Feeling confused

I thought I was the only one frustrated with meetings until my colleagues also mentioned they were not able to get work done because most of the day was spent on meetings

Plus our boss (CEO) loves talking, anyway the meetings are agenda-less. He stretches 30 min calls to 2 hours and then has the audacity to question the productivity.

Cannot tell me this, he gets very touchy when feedback is negative for him. And then writes sarcastic messages.
Also, who wants to take up fights with person who pays your salary

What to do in this case? I'm tired of working 12 hours each day

Too many meetings, and our boss is one yapper

1. Try sending invites with an agenda 
 2. Drop off the call and leave a message that you gotta attend another meeting or you're working on something that's a priority or any personal reasons  
 3. After every meeting send an MOM 
 4. Do everything for you to escape any meaningless meetings except telling your boss. That's the safest option. 
  
 If there's one thing that TCS taught me...it is to PRETEND like every manager is nice and always right. If not you'll definitely lose your mind.

I am a 6 yrs experienced Software developer and part of a mid-stage startup. This is my third job; I have been working here for 3 years. I was involved here as one of the core engineers at the start in developing the overall platform, After that, my growth as an engineer stagnated for 2 years . 

Constant importance and priority are given to business requirements and hacky work getting pushed to production in the name of fast iterations and business impact every week. 

My engineering manager lacks proper engineering skills and doesn't respect engineers even after their impact on the company and constantly keeps saying the engineering team doesn't contribute to the revenue of the company despite us pushing work that improves business positively. 

Last year around November, around 80% of the engineering team was subtly suggested to start looking out for work (basically a soft layoff) because management was too scared of a social media backlash

Due to all this,2 years' worth of technical debt has accumulated on the overall codebase and apart from giving justification for every code improvement that we try to make there, we still have to work on business/product requirements. 

My growth as an engineer has stopped and I am worried about missing out on the latest developments in the tech industry, especially with AI in the picture, and want to make my skillset somewhat AI-proof. I have come back to hands-on coding this year , so that's a positive start. I am considering taking a 3-4 month break after resigning from my company to study, develop side projects, develop a portfolio etc

Has anyone else been in this boat ? How did you come out strong?

I have been talking to a few companies, across different size bands.
Only Indian startups seem to obsessed with full week WFO/Micromanagement.

A few years back, startups were known for being more flexible, now it just seems to be the reverse.

Why are Indian startups so obsessed with Micromanagement? i.e. WFO

I know a lot of folks will not agree, but when it comes to accountability (+ some integrity), the vast majority are really really behind. Those who show some are stomped up on as well.  
  
 The only way to get over this might be to micromanage. I'm not in support of it, but I myself have been seeing a change around me because of some people, a few others will also have to suffer from micro-management. Yes, it's not easy on me/my mind, but the work is moving a bit more.  
  
 I've seen this at a lot of places. I usually trust others with things, but the results have more often disappointed me. Now, I just delegate only of it's really required.

So it’s barely been a month since I’ve joined this company and my manager has already started dumping his workload to me on weekends and at odd hours late in the night. 

Now he’s not a horrible person but I hate how normalised this culture is at this entire organisation. I get it if I’m a founder or working at a startup, I have to be prepared to hustle but not at a big corporation. 

And the irony is that I once needed something urgently from someone based in Europe from our team but my manager asked me to call him the next day since that person was out of his working hours while I was on a call with my manager at 1:18am…..

I’ve also noticed how casually he calls me everyday post 9pm to ask for updates or give a new task. My work hours end by 6pm. 

I really want to to establish certain boundaries, and not want to work on weekends. I’m a biker, and I’ve been cancelling all my biking plans on weekends just cause of this. How do I go about this without it negatively affecting my ratings/impressions etc.?? I have a life smh.

This works only  with western managers. India managers will take it to heart and make it an ego issue. The effect will be felt on something else. If the manger is a man, he will let it go if you correct yourself next  time. If the manager is a woman, will never see the end of it. 

Always treat  Indian managers like street dogs. You dont pet them , but you dont throw stones at them either..
