What is the one single factor that is the root of all problems in India?

Overpopulation. No matter which issue you pick, under a few layers, there is a tsunami of people behind each and everything. Poverty? Because of Overpopulation Low Literacy? Because of Overpopulation Joblessness? Because of Overpopulation Majority of our public transport is bad? Under a few layers, Overpopulation Government unable take drastic steps for improvement? Overpopulation I think even these unnecessary rallies and “morchas” run by the government where you see “TONS of people” is also due to overpopulation. IF we weren’t 1.9 Billion, maybe a billion less, I think India would be free of its shackles and probably a superpower 50 years ahead of its current trajectory (These are all non-factual statements. Feel free to debate on this) I love my country, but I’m curious to understand if population is the only thing holding us back, or is it something else

Slightly disagree. Root cause has to be illiteracy. If you are literate, problem of overpopulation will not happen in the first place. If you are literate, you’ll eventually figure things out for yourself be it removing poverty, getting a job or anything. Infact, think for a moment, how did overpopulation happen? It’s not something which we were born with. It all happened because of illiteracy. Now as more and more people are getting educated, we can see the curve is flattening, but still a long way to go.

Agree. For country with a population the size of ours, the state of education system starting from elementary to post graduate levels is pathetic. If you're smart enough, then you learn to game the system but real education ends up happening mostly through self learning right from school days. The very few who would counter this point are the lucky, previleged few. We really need better education system and better teachers for our society.

Its not just about the teachers we need to get educated. You need to have that learning mindset as well. Hunger to learn more and more will lead you to places which you can’t even imagine.

1.9 Billion! Akhand Bharat. But totally in agreement. It's a tightrope walk from now till 2054 when we'll start experiencing meaningful population declines. The demographic dividend if deployed well can propel us faster to being a middle income country. On the contrary, if we don't get that right it'll continue to fuel pockets of unrest.

I disagree. We had poverty, low literacy, joblessness, bad public transport, low agency governments when our population was 1/5th, 1/10th, 1/2 of now - ie basically forever. On the other hand, right now our population demographic dividends is one of the few things working in our favour. And if we're able to design economic policies geared up to utilise our reducing dependency ratio, we'll reap a lot of economic benefits of population. Population growth rates are a helpful factor for economic growth as long as the young non-dependent population is growing faster than the dependent population. Shockingly for us, a VERY BIG problem might be falling TFR rates below standard population replacement levels so we'll never be able to follow the population growth trajectory required to be a developed economy and end up in the middle income trap.
