Oyo was the only Indian startup who had defined a India specific problem, had a solution and had money to scale. What went wrong? What a pity.

In comparison Airbnb made it big...

A lot of companies tried to be too many things at once. Oyo ended up one of them. Call it the masa effect.

The comparison with Airbnb can be explained by 1 thing: Disposable income. Actually 2, global execution vs domestic only. 3 lol, mostly software vs higher touch points.

Unit economics were never in their favor

Masa was dreaming of a $100 billion valuation for Oyo before the WeWork saga happened. The team was doing all kind of shit to expand the TAM/revenue without applying basic common sense.

@HighOak28 your deposit is not with fi, it's with federal Bank afaik. If something happens, they'll find a way for you to access the money directly through the bank. Fi is just a fancy ui on top.

JumpyBanana

Exactly they don't have any long term positioning or value that justifies their valuation

JazzyWaffle
JazzyWaffle

True. In fintech, I blame the VCs. Way too much money invested in an ecosystem where the regulator is conservative. Could never understand it.

Fi didn't have any chance to make it.

The way I see it - who's sitting on the interview panel is more important than the candidate sitting across from them.

And I am being explicit - not equally BUT MORE IMPORTANT But we pay the least attention to that part - by design or by choice.

It’s okay if you don’t agree. But answer this:

  • Do you know why your panel is structured the way it is? Is ...
