Depression is common in Bangalore?

I recently moved to Bangalore and almost immediately went into a zone of persistently feeling sad and hopeless. I refused to take antidepressants. I am doing slightly better after few sessions of therapy, but I want to know some other alternatives? Anybody experienced the same thing? What makes it better? Bangalore feels like a culture-less city tbh.

It's same for all metro. But I will tell what helped me.

Don't just work and eat sleep.

Pursue few hobbies...like i picked swimming, running and gym on weekends.

Read books...

Travel to South Indian places and beaches hill stations.

Read spiritual books or listen to them.

Eat healthy, watch healthy, think healthy.

Always take care of parents n siblings health especially.

Thanks mate. These are wonderful suggestions. I tried picking up a hobby- may I ask how do you consistently keep at it? With so much work it’s just hard to keep up. I start doing most of these things but then unable to consistently do them.

That's a problem.

But I make sure to follow any 1 daily.

Like if I skip swimming, I can read a book.

If am not feeling like going to run, I just visit beautiful lakes.

If I don't feel like going out, just go to roof and soak vitamin d with podcast.

Till swiggy ipo u will have to manage else switch buddy.

Get out of the well.

Even 1cr ESOP will not fix your mental health

I moved to Bengaluru a decade ago and I just love this city.

It's not a perfect city, but the best out of all Indian cities I have been to.

Calling the city names, is only going causing animosity.

If you don't like Namma Bengaluru, leave.

In fact, pehli fursat me nikal.

City is better without cry babies like you.

If you are depressed, that's your problem, not of this city.

Hey man, no hate for Bangalore. For an outsider, it’s not got much to do I feel except going to clubs, most probably I am wrong. But all that aside, what makes me a cry baby? Mind explaining?

Read what you wrote twice at least:

"I recently moved to Bangalore and almost immediately went into a zone of persistently feeling sad and hopeless.

You came to Bengaluru because no where else in India you will get the kind of salary that you get in Bengaluru.

Be grateful first to local people who created the business friendly ambience and then to the city which is welcoming people from all over India.

i agree on the last line, with a slight modification. Most areas in Bangalore are culturally bankrupt. Unless you live in old areas in banglaore, this feeling is inevitable.

I know right! What should people who don’t want to go to clubs and drink alcohol do?

PrancingPickle

I've lived here for long and now I'm on the path of quitting alcohol, also I've also become less interested in clubbing in general, so basically I'm figuring out new way of living in this city that I love. Here's what I'm trying: Cubbon park picnics on weekend mornings+ with good breakfast in Koshys

Meet your friends for brunches. Not in the evening. Meet them over food/movie or event.

Go book shopping, and read in cafes. It gives my brain an illusion of an outing or productivity plus if you enjoy the book genuinely even better.

Gymming/swimming - a hobby that gets you out of your house twice a week atleast

Board games night- groups in Bangalore host such nights ,some in no alcohol cafes, which is great. Reduces temptation. Go to these places.

Invest in good speakers or a projector and rediscover good music or movies.make it a thing. Movie night every Wednesday. Enjoy it by yourself, slowly you can start inviting friends, neighbours, movie buffs etc..

Build comforting corners in your home. I am doing this. I built a small library and reading corner for myself. Next in line - I'm building a music wall- with work from my favourite artists such as Beatles, Zeppelin etc - in this corner of my home, I will devour music. A friend told me this worked for him too- he calls his corner the Man cave- he plays guitar, has a new drum set to learn drums and has set up huge screening for his football matches. His rule is for whatever time he spends in mancave, is just for it, no other thoughts allowed.

Go for walks

These are few things I'm trying . Hopefully I feel way better

What did you do outside of work in whichever city you were before? And what’s preventing you from continuing it on Bangalore?

More often than not it’s being uprooted from your community of friends and family which ends up making you dislike the new place. Having moved around 6 times or so I can totally relate to this feeling.

The best antidote is to get to know the place and its people better. Make friends with locals and ask them for suggestions, walk around non-tech neighborhoods (eg, Jayanagar, Malleshwaram), visit the places that gives this city its unique characteristics (IISc, KR Market, Avenue Road book shops etc). Equally importantly there are awesome places within 200-300KM radius of Bangalore, of all sorts, visit them.

In the end you need to make an effort to get to know the city, it’s unique nature, it’s history for you to like it. There’s no substitute for this I’m afraid. Or else you will eternally be in this state of hating a place, it could be Bangalore today and some other place tomorrow.

Explore the city and just move around. You will feel better. It holds good to any new place.

There are many historic places within the city to see. Go to the Old parts of Bangalore and join some book clubs. There are a plenty of activities to do instead of feeling what you just expressed.
