FOMO in tech

I've turned 27, roughly 3yoe earning 50k which is low but I'm upskilling. Currently due to layoffs, AI news and just a very unhealthy state of IT things are getting very depressing and I personally feel like I've already lost or missed in life. People are planning to get married around me everything is so sudden.

People of grapevine, what advice would you want to give people like me who feel lost. Any general advice such as financial planning, lifestyle changes or just tech advice any advice which has helped you to live peacefully and comfortably would be greatly appreciated.

Advice : Please stop with the tutorial and enrolling in courses after course. Doesn't take you anywhere. Been there and done that.

You will end up with stupid clones which does seem like a value add in your resume. It's just there in everyone's resume.

Build one project, one solid project, maybe something to do with MFE. Not CRA react app but something with webpack if you prefer. Maybe a ecom app with seperate mfe for order and billing. Show the interaction between them, post on Twitter while you build. Share insights and maybe you will end up being in a recruiter's eye.

I have never done a course in my life , still doing pretty well for myself. Let me tell you the secret framework which will have fetch high paying job: there is no framework its only hard work. You have to be top 1% for me it was dsa, for some of my friends it was open source, for another it could be ml. Now u cant reach there by lazying around and self pitying, but by work diligently 3-4hr daily consistently for 1yr. Somewhere along the line u will reach there. And by working i dont mean doing same shit iver and over again but rather learning everyday and being good at your craft. You should live and breathe about ur craft. If thats not u , u are also fine you have a life outside of work, enjoy it. You do you. Context: 3yoe from tier earning close to half a century from a tier 3 college. I worked my ass off actively avoided bad peer group who didn’t contribute to my success, for me my goal >>>>everything else. That was me personally, if you want that thats up to u.

Wake up in the morning and take a walk
Gym: based on your comfort either in morning or evening but go for it. If not possible take a walk or run.
Hardwork: which you are already doing Eat Sleep: Good amount of sleep is very important. Do some parties. Don't take much stress. Stress does not give you anything but can take a lot from yourself. So stay motivated and work hard. Whenever you feel lost just look at the people around you and see how many are are struggling to meet their daily requirements in India, you will see even 50k is very good amount of money for a lot of people in India.

You're young. Don't stress about the salary now. Questions you could ask yourself are:

  1. Am I doing what I want to do?
  2. Am I contributing enough?

While you may not think it now, if you were earning 4 or 10 times what you are, you may still wonder if you have missed the bus.

My suggestion is to have a goal of what you want to be doing in terms of kind of work and skills - not only in terms of money.

Also it's important to aspire for something big. Look at what you want for yourself in terms of creating impact - money will follow.

There will generally be someone who is doing better and some not as well as you. Everyone has their own timeline, and your jump may come later and maybe far greater than others around you.

All the best!

Hey thanks I guess I'm stuck in a constant loop of comparison which makes me miserable

I've honestly never thought of making an impact thanks for giving me a point to ponder.

While I recommended impact, it's also important to know your worth. So it's good to understand company trends and pay patterns.

All the best!

Probably pick up a open-source project that interests you (and might also be sponsored by a company or rather actively built by a company .... A lot of companies now tend to build a open source core product and sell cloud hosting of it) and then start understanding it and contributing.
It serves two purpose:

  1. All the upskilling you need is in there. Since these are real technical products they have all the system design and technologies that you typically need to get a job done.
  2. It helps you become visible to that company which can potentially be your next employer.

Bro you are 3 years experience earning 50k, I m 6 having 6yrs earning just around 63k in-hand, everyday I feel the same thing and from the last 2 years haven't done any development work since company has no development work at all so lost skills. But I have restarted my journey by doing personal projects for honing my development skills and also slowly started dsa but it's difficult to do both bcoz since I m not in touch with coding I m feeling like fresher but have to drill else will be way behind than I am today. So no other option.

See bro at least you are getting 50k at the age 27 so cheers that there are plenty of people who age 27 to 35 or more still not getting that much so don't think negatively you have enough time to gain knowledge in new skill or in the same skill gets some more experience nothing comes suddenly weather it's salary or food in your plate or success that you hope but that doesn't not mean you can't achieve first you have patience second constant effort for you target third never give up spirit and you have to consult with you known person who is in IT market who have enough experience to guide you more better way baaki shaadi toh Teri ho jayegi bhai itna bura time nhi chal rha at least you are earning person

Life and salary are unfair. The whole point is what you do with your life and the salary you get for now. How much value can you derive? Start thinking like that. Try to squeeze maximum value at your work, with capital from that work, family expenditure, and all. And do things that will make you happy in the long term, not in the short term or instantly. And remember, if your whole net worth goes to zero (just for analogy), what would you do? Explore dimensions and be fearless.
