Is remote working still the preferred mode?

In the post Covid era when people are actually back to flooding offices and the highways are back to being jammed 24/7 and the elevator space is being hogged by everyone who has to get off before you, is remote still preferred?

By employees in majority, yes. By employers, no

But does it give the employees that sense of community? What are the long term impacts of permanent remote workers? Won’t people become too disconnected from the organisation and eventually lose interest?

Remote orgs still organise meetups to tackle this. There are online activities as well

Companies will notice the drop in productivity once folks are back in office. People should have a choice to work from an office or from home.

  1. Remote first companies have team get together in head offices
  2. They book coworking spaces in all major cities for remote workers to meet and collaborate in person if they wish to
  3. Culture is shaped in a way where everyone can thrive irrespective of on-site or remote.

I get very little work done when I am in office. Mostly visit office to meet team members, catch-up on gossip and have a laugh. Get most work done at home where there are zero distractions.

Aisa kuchh nahi hoga. Companies value camaraderie / control / faster decision making more than individual productivity. If managers don’t see you for some time, you are “out of sight out of mind” no matter how you perceive it. Culture is not shaped in remote, it’s only good for a transactional relationship between company and the employee.

I agree, it’s very difficult to drive culture and get a sense of oneness when all your employees are remote
